Default '65 Love Affair---Tall Boy Style!

They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I am a HUGE fan of the 1965 Topps Football Tall Boy set. I love how the colors and size work together. I usually have to have the cool older logos for a card/set to be complete, but these cards rock even without that. Love that Whalen #22 with the silver helmet! The big city names/fonts at the tops of the cards really draws me in. The AFL is fascinating to me. It is one of my favorite topics/leagues to learn about: colorful, exciting, and high-flying!

For the next few nights I am going to share pics of my set one team at a time until I am finished. I will be the first to admit the pics are low quality. I did the best I could to take the pics with my phone and fighting the glare and other factors, but there are some good pics. I really, really wanted to have larger scale pics showing the full 21 or so cards for each team, but I just couldn't pull it off without them being too large or too blurry. As it is, they just look so great together! Football season is upon us, so let's celebrate with a great, colorful set starting with the Boston Patriots!

Couldn't agree more, one of the all time great sets. That Whalen card is spectacular.

Go Bills, for we are here to cheer for you.....

Again, please excuse the slip-shod photography. I am having a tough week. Looking at these cards makes me a little happier. Love these cards!

Great stuff, Robert! 1965 was a great year for the Buffalo Bills. Second consecutive AFL Championship and the last Bills team to win it all since then.

There's some real AFL star power on that team.

Beautiful cards, they were a favorite of mine in '65 especially Lance Alworth!

I too love the 65's. My autographed and slabbed 65 Cappelletti is my fave football card in my collection.

I had to work a little late tonight, but here are the Houston Oilers. While still attractive, these are probably my least favorite cards in the set.

I agree, I really like all Tall boy efforts. The 65 FB I had many as a 7 year old and put the set back together a few years back. I always thought the Ernie ladd card was a sleeper tough one.

IMHO, the best is saved for last. If I love the rest of this tall boy set, then I really, really LOVE the Chargers cards. Throughout the 60s, the San Diego cards really jump out at me, and these do not disappoint! Thanks for viewing this thread (with the sometimes subpar photography ) as I have displayed the set one team at a time. I hope it has been enjoyable for some of you to look at. They make my day a little happier.

Great, great set. My second-favorite AFL set, only behind 1963 Fleer. I am one card shy of completing an autographed version of this set, along with a number of different versions of some of the cards. Thank you for sharing!

Awesome stuff! Thank you for sharing yours. I really, really like the tall boys. I also agree 1963 Fleer is great. I am thinking 1961 Fleer is next for me, 1963 won't be far behind!

Thanks For Sharing--amazing centering on most of those cards (mine is a raw set i purchased at a card show in the mid-80's for about 50.00). It is by far my favorite AFL set and top 5 Football set ever!

Great images of a great set! Thought I would share a picture of the wrapper as it hasn't been shown in this thread yet.

Anybody else collecting football wrappers? I'm trying to get one for each set in the 1888-1988 football set run I just completed and would love to compare notes.
