Default 1940 Play Ball Superman Ad Back

Hi guys, does anyone have any information on this issue? I have done some research and found an article by Lemke on it, but I cannot seem to locate much other than that. Are certain cards particularly difficult with this back? Are some not supposed to have it?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I think it is incorrect, hoping someone has further information. I have cards that are out of that # range /w Superman backs.

Edit:

In Lemke's article he states
"Each of those cards, however, can also be found with one of six advertising messages for Gum Inc.'s Superman gum cards. For reasons unknown, cards #121-122, which were printed on the same sheet(s) as #123-180, are NOT found with Superman ad backs. Only one of the various Superman ads is found on any particular card."

I have card #122 /w a Superman back.

That is within the range of cards that are supposed to have it. The card I am specifically talking about is one that is claimed to not exist.

That would almost certainly mean that #121 could be found with the Superman back as well. #121/#122 may very well be rarer examples. Unfortunately, as Bob mentions, not a lot of attention is given to this back variation.

The one example I have, I bought with no mention at all of the back variation.

Definitely relevant news though.

I have #121 with a Superman ad back. I have several examples of other numbers where I have two different ad backs - one is a Superman, and one is just about the baseball set itself.

There may be others but this was the blog post I was referring to. Its a good read even though it seems they've found misinformation.

Based on this new information, I have updated that blog post from 10/11.

I finally broke down and dug out my 1940 PBs and found that #122 has a Superman ad back. My card 121 does not have the ad back. If I have time I'll dig through more of my PBs and see if I have dupes of those cards. If I find a dupe 121 or 122 with a Superman back, I'll post that I found it.

Ok, I found my box with 1940 dupes, I have a 121 with a Superman ad. Also found a T206 with a Sovereign 460 back and a few other Sovereign 350 backs. I haven't looked through that box in ages.....

Are Sovereign 460 backs hard to find?

I just looked through my '40 PB and have Superman backs well outside the 121-180 range indicated. Nothing before #121 but I have Superman back examples all the way through to #240, some PSA graded (fwiw). Below are three outside the range, each with a different Superman ad.

Most of my high numbers have a Superman ad back. I also have no Superman backs before #121.

I also found ad backs in the hi number series. I didn't look at the backs of cards earlier than 121.

A couple of questions regarding Superman backs.

1. When did SGC start labeling their flips with the Superman notation?
2. I haven’t seen a flip fron PSA with a Superman notation. Do they not recognize/label it?
3. Is there a premium for the Superman backs?

Thanks for your help!

To answer #3, it is a variation with no premium.
