Default How do you justify keeping dupes?

Over the past 2-3 years I have been focusing more on upgrading my Hank vintage cards to higher grades. I would then sell my dupe, as I didn't need it in a lower grade.

I had a thought recently to keep my dupes, especially in mid grades... If you keep dupes, how do you justify it? Trying to reason with myself.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian- that's the same method I use, though it seems I always end up getting far less I originally paid when moving the dups.

i'm going to wait for the right deal to come along, but i certainly do loosen up if nothing more than making the old card available

Dupes? Trade bait. Or I usually sell to put into other cards I want more.
Don't know how to justify straight dupes unless you are going for a second, third etc.. set. Or if you want to just hoard, that is ok too. You don't have to justify it to us, we are similar.

Default how do I justify keeping my dupes...lets see

That's easy! One for my team set, one for my player set, one for my type card set, and one for each miscellaneous other grouping I might be working on, plus trade bait or items for sale (that I may never actually sell). That's at least 5 right there. Also need to take into consideration whether there are different front/back combos, variations, or proofs known to exist, in which case you multiply each possible card by 5.

Any more than that and your just a hoarder.

The only card I hoard is from a local team so I just say it’s meant to be in Richmond lol.

Default Dupes Rule

I have never regretted having more than one of each card. If you dont then you have nothing to trade or if something goes up in value over time, you still cant benefit without selling your only copy if you dont have dupes. I also remember the time as a kid when I put my 1969 Mantles on the table and noticed.....HEY one of those has white letters instead of the yellow like the others! I kept the group together and felt vindicated years later when I finally re entered the hobby and discovered the White Letter variations were more valuable!

It's super easy to justify. I like cards, some cards I like more than others, if I like a card a lot, I will keep multiple copies.

Why do you have to justify it?

The only exceptions I can think of, where you would need to justify it to yourself or someone else, are if space is at a premium, or if the duplicate is something you can get good money for and your financial situation is such that the money will be a big help.

Otherwise, if you like having duplicates, that's how you enjoy the hobby. Case closed.
