Congrats on the '51 Mantle pickup!. Nice image and well-centered. Well done!

Dude, you must be over the moon with that addition. Watched that one. Its combination of centering and registration is nothing short of anomalous for a 51 Bowman Mantle-- and some serendipitously placed "clutch" damage made it a steal price, too! Congrats on another great card.

I assume this card rates higher than the one you just purchased? If so, I guess, despite my best efforts, will I ever figure out this grading thing! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-Bowman-...-/121864007870

cincyreds24, a sweet pickup with the Mantle. I took a quick look and almost pulled trigger on it but decided not to (much to my regret now) as I was stalking some other pickups at the time. Enjoy your ride on cloud 9!!!
MattyC, That 57 Mantle has some serious pop when you look at it. The centering along with the bright borders and color/focus is crazy good for the grade. The eye-appeal tops a lot of other higher graded examples. A keeper for sure. Greg, That 56 Mantle is incredible looking for the grade. Not sure I have seen any better looking PSA 6. A great Mantle addition congrats. Jason, I know it was mentioned already but that 72 Munson and Bench card is not easy to find centered and you landed both at the same time that is well-played. This has been a great February pickup thread so far. Hope to post a pickup soon. |

I will also say were I to build a 50's set it would be 1956. Love that string of 1956 cards earlier. MattyC, while your 1953 Mantle is obviously and clearly a megastar five-digit card, I must repeat the above sentiment on your "lesser" 1957 (I recall your PSA 8 of the 1957 ) That PSA 5 exemplar is a "phreak." Cincy, I drool for that Bowman Mantle Rookie. I am priced out of mid-grades now I think. Difficult to find a better "one," hahaha. Last edited by MetsBaseball1973; 02-08-2016 at 07:56 PM. |

53 Mick
Might as well follow the trend of 53 Mick. Just picked this up from a fellow board member. Very happy with the corners and the centering. Has a crease on the front that doesn't detract too much from the card. The big killer is some paper loss on the back. But from the front this has a very strong eye appeal for me.

Some great cardboard picked up here this month. I haven't posted over here much, but maybe I'll start. My current focus is HOF rookies, as I'm slowly chipping away at the post-war set. Here are a couple of recent pickups.

The top right side is a bit hinky, but man is this a tough variation to find…
1969piratesrookies.jpg We used to give my friend various Shellenback cards on his birthday way back when after he made a seemingly spurious claim of being his nephew.

Agreed Darren, that one is "stupid" tough
Not sure if it is really a variation or a scarce recurring print defect, but it has hobby recognition as a variation and is much sought after Last edited by ALR-bishop; 02-10-2016 at 03:23 PM. |

62 Topps #594
I thought my '62 Topps Dodgers Team Set was complete until I discovered Doug Camilli appeared on this multi-player rookie catcher card alongside Bob Uecker. Now my team set is complete again (I think).

Bought a collection that had 310 !958 Topps in it. Also had 530 1959 Topps. Most of the 59's are in super nice condition. Haven't decided if I will get them graded or not. I mainly collect prewar. If I got them graded which company should I use? Also had 46 of the Ted Williams in the collection and 110 Topps Football. Not sure what I am going to do with the cards yet.

Yes, Sosa, Aaron, and Mathews are the answers. An honorable mention is McCovey who also played in the AL for part of a season with Oakland; however, he didn't hit any home runs there.
Meanwhile, the other 5 players are NL lifers: Bonds, Mays, Schmidt, Banks, Ott. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk

Great trivia question. I admit to finally resorting to Google to find out it was Sosa. My first thought was McCovey, but I couldn't remember if he hit a homer with Oakland. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

With the arrival by mail of my 67T Fergie Jenkins, I am at last able to post a 100% done Board #2 for my Top 100 display.
In contrast, Board #1 has 11 placeholders--the bottom row of 59F Williams cards and the 40PB Klein--that will ultimately be replaced. Will take a while though. Combined, when finished, the two boards will feature my personal slate of the 100 greatest players from 1933-1980.

February pickups
Thanks. I've been looking for a Jackie in mid-grade shape for a while and was really just balking at how expensive his 1950's Topps cards in any kind of condition have become. So this is a double win in that not only do I love this card, I think I have opened myself up to the world of Exhibits finally! They're really cool.

Speaking of Venz, I had a good mail day. Here are my newest Venz additions. The Torre is my favorite of this bunch.
These cards all have condition issues, of course, but the backs are unusually clean for Venies. I now have 7 cards for the 68 Venz Red Sox team set and 24 total 68 Venies.
