Name the oldest continuous baseball franchise ?

I would also venture to say it is the longest running franchise in all of the American sports.

The Chicago Cubs (1870) I'm pretty sure is the oldest continuous baseball team...they predate the phillies by 3 or 4 years.

I was under the impression that you could trace the Atlanta Braves back to the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869 ...

Tie Between: Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. Not a single city or name change or gap since their beginning(1901).

We need some clarification here Ted...if it's the oldest continuous team nickname it's the Phillies. If it's the longest continuous franchise it is the Cubs.

The Cubs were not the Cubs until 1903.
The Phillies have only been the Phillies without interuption since 1945.

Their official name is the Reds and it has only been official since 1960.

The Phillies never officially changed their nickname. They still had "Phillies" on their uniform through the whole "Blue Jays" name change.

Atlanta started as the Boston Red Caps in 1876. I would not call 6 name changes and 3 city changes as being continuous.

Philadelphia PHILLIES is the correct answer......established in 1876, they have been the PHILLIES since 1883.

The Chicago franchise was originally the WHITE STOCKINGS.....it dominated the old National League from 1880 to 1891
with that great HOFer....Adrian "Cap" Anson as their player/manager.

I am going to have to disagree. Philadelphia started as the Quackers in 1883 and changed to the Phillies in 1890 (1 year prior to the Pirates). Then for some strange reason, they officially changed their name to the Blue Jays for the 1943 and 1944 seasons. Because of this folly, the rightfull crown should default to the Pittsburg Pirates.

The White Stocking are the same "Franchise" as the Cubs, it is older than the Phillies. Now if you had said same continuous nickname I would agree that it's the Phillies, but I am certain the NL Chicago franchise is the answer to your original question.

Edited to add: A nickname change is not a franchise change - would anyone argue that the NY Highlanders is not the same franchise as the NY Yankees? Or that the Colt 45's is not the same franchise as the Astros?

"I realize you were the 1st with the correct answer.'

If the Cubs lose out for being the White Stockings, Colts and Orphans, then surely,Philadelphia must lose the string for being the Blue Jay's in 43 and 44. Righfull victory to the Pirates.

You can't have anything anymore...

I didn't get on line in time for the question... but got here in time for the fussin'.

Reminds me of the nickname of one of the ballplayers who's in the white border set... 'Death to all things fun."

I will concede that the Pirates have the Phillies beat by one year on longest continuous nickname...but the Phillies never officially changed their name to the Blue Jays. The uniforms always said "Phillies" on them with a blue jay on the sleeve.

And for the record the original question said "Longest continuous franchise" which is of course the Cubs.

The Phillies trump themselves as the longest running single name, single city team. If I were the Pirates, I would have a beef with this due to the whole Blue Jay formal naming situation, but still keeping the Phillies nick name. Good topic for the SABR guys to rule on officially:>)

Ted, my disagreements were in jest (good nature).

Just a fun, thought-provoking thread....we cranked up 36 posts in just 2 hours.

Dan, I will concede this to you......when I saw this stated at the HOF, I thought it made sense, since I assumed
that the old Chicago WHITE STOCKINGS became the WHITE SOX in 1901 when the American League was formed.

But, as we know the old Chicago team became the CUBS; however, their uniforms did not reflect this until 1909.

Best regards

T-Rex TED
