Default My Quest To Conquer The Monster

Hey guys. I posted in January that I was going to re-focus my collection to a couple of areas. The first was to start my T206 set.

After a couple of months, I have picked up some really nice cards from guys here on the boards.....Doug (piedmont150), Christopher (christopher.herman), Brian (brian29575), Erick (t206hound), Rick (ricktmd) and Craig (White Borders) who sent me an awesome T206 starter package (t206 holders, 9 holder pocket pages and even a raw T206 - that was awesome of Craig). I would really like to thank everyone for their help. I really appreciate it.

I would like to document my journey with this thread and post my T206's as I pick them up. I currently have 24 of the 524 cards (5%). 8 raw and 16 graded (2.5 - 4 range). Below are the cards I have so far:

Nice start so far. Maybe you should show your back progress also as you go along. So far I've seen that you've hit at least 4 of the different backs. Pretty soon, you'll have a Monster number to give to Frank also.

You have one. You just don't know it yet.

Default Congalton SC 350

Picked up a very nice Cogalton SC 350 from Drumback2 (Mark). It wasn't an increase to my base Monster number but it is my first card of the same player but different backs (have the piedmont version).

You probably already know this, but as you track your backs, distinguish between the factory numbers as well. This can make a small difference with the Sweet Caps, but is more important with the Piedmonts.
Piedmont 350-460s are usually from Factory 25, but you may come across a rare Factory 42. Very good for you if you find one.

Very nice! Remember the Monster wants you to quit -- don't listen to it!

You've really done very well with the eye appeal as well, technical grade notwithstanding.

Keep us posted!

Thanks guys. I went into this knowing it will be a LONG TERM project. I am sure the Monster will really be biting my butt when Mr. Cobb, Mr. Young, Mr. Matty and other HOF's hit my list.....LOL.

I am trying to stay in the the 3-4 range with really nice eye appeal. It takes alot of patience which I am starting to attain as I get older.

It took me less than 2 years to get to 518, but I wouldn't recommend going that fast. I wish I had taken my time, collect a certain grade range, etc. It's a lot of fun and you learn a lot. Good job so far!

Default National Pick-Up's

3 days at the Natty and only picked up two T206's for my set. There were a good selection to pick from just didn't seem to be able to come to agreement on price.

The first card I picked up was Mr. Mullen with bat. Was able to get for a good price.

And my first HOF'r......Mr. Matty. I got this from Ted Zanidakis. It was a real pleasure talking with Ted......very knowledgeable and spent time to talk with me. There is a small pencil mark on the back that dropped the grade but I am OK with that. I love the way the front presents and am stoked to have my first HOF'r.

Oh, so you're the guy who bought the Mullin!

Just joking

I looked at that card on Thursday during my first lap around the floor. It is a nice looking card, but I was holding out for one with a Polar Bear back. Not finding one, I went back yesterday to find an empty spot in the dealer's showcase.

You're right, the dealer had it priced to sell.

Congrats on the pick-ups and your first HOFer! Nice cards!

Jantz - that is funny about the Mullin. The older gentlemen were from Michigan and that was the only T206 on his table as it was a Tiger. I really liked the centering. I bought it on Friday.

Thanks for the comments on the Matty. I just couldn't NOT buy it.

If I ever decide to sell, it will be to you Eric.

Default New Additions and Post #100

Was able to pick up 3 more cards over the last week. The first was an ebay pick-up.

The Evers I picked up from Mikehealer here on the boards. Was just blown away with this card. The colors just knock you out. This may be my favorite card.

The next card came from a very good friend of mine. He collected hockey cards back in the late 70's and early 80's. I bugged him for 7 or 8 years to get back into collecting. Well, now he is fast and furious back into collecting pre and post war hockey. For helping educate him, he bought this Frank Chance for me. Now this is what collecting is all about. I won't ever sell this card.

I am closing in on 10% of the way through the set. I am sitting at 43/524 for 8%. Hopefully I will get to 10% by the end of the year.

Mark

As Luke said, you have a great eye for your cards. They look very sharp. Most of the 2s &3s look much nicer. I have been at it since 2003, and have reached about 350. Good luck and don't back down, I get sidetracked and onto other sets.

Thanks guys. I have really made it a point to be a stickler for the type of card I want. It has been tough to pass on some cards but it is rewarding to be able to stick to your guns.

Picked up two more thanks to Joem (Joe). Both Old Mill backs. I have the Egan already raw (piedmont) so I can add to my back count.

I am at 54/524.

Default Hi Mark

Over the past 34 years, I have put together several T206 sets (from 518 to 521 cards each). And, my advice to you is to "jump start" your T206 adventure
by acquiring any where from 50 to 200 card lots.

This will really encourage you to stick with this challenging task.

Good luck,

TED Z

Default Update

I have updated in the last few months. Been a little slow on the T206 front. I have been getting more stringent on what quality I want to pick up. Here are the latest two that I have acquired in the last 4 weeks.

Both are Piedmont 350's.

This puts me at 56 (11%).

Mark
