Default NSCC Update

Rick Giddings, who is on the dealer board posted this updated on his FB page.

I've edited down the post to hit the key points

Being a member of the National Sports Collectors Board of Directors I have been asked many questions because of the Corona Virus Epidemic. No decision has been made yet about if the “Show will go on or not?” In talking to our President Mrs Etta Hersh, I was informed no decision will be made till the end of May.

Many of you have asked the options if you don't want to set up because se you feel July 29th is too close. If you decide not to set up and the show does go on. You can take a skip year, get a full refund or apply it to next year's show in Chicago.

Talking to Etta she was very understanding. Currently the Convention Center is being used like a hospital for the infected, but we will know more at the end of May!

Note: If you have any questions and are a dealer contact Rick or Etta or Megan. I just thought this was worthy of posting.

Rich

I was not planning on going but I can tell you if I was I would certainly have to think long and hard about it. From the fact the convention center is being used for a hospital currently to the fact that most sporting events and other large gatherings are being cancelled almost on a daily basis, cards just don't mean that much to me if I have a high potentially to get sick from going. I just think attendance by both dealers and collectors will be way down if the National is allowed to happen. It just makes me think the next years show in Chicago has the opportunity to be one that is huge!!

I would be interested to know if they plan on yanking the tables from outed scammers/trimmers/alterers and their enablers: PWCC, PSA, SGC, BGS. But then, that's probably not worth asking...

Look on the bright-side: the PSA line-up might at least be manageable.

I understand the aggravations with Mr. Giddings but the point was, to disseminate information NOT TO get into personal issues. Please take this as information pertaining to a NSCC update and NOTHING MORE.

Thanks!

Huge news out of Gilead Sciences after the market close on their drug remdesivir. Stock futures taking it very seriously.

A glimmer of hope for the world.

Tremendous results treating severe cases of Covid 19.

Keep your fingers crossed!!

Gilead is trading up 15% right now. Their market cap coming into today was 96 billion. For a stock to move this much it is a big deal.

You can't sustain a move like this on monster volume if there isn't really good news here.

As I said the world needs this. A real glimmer of hope.

Seriously? Stocks have been moving in huge swings...daily...for over a month now. It doesn't take much "news" for people to "react" these days.

I hope this will work out...but a 15% move in stock price the day the "news" breaks...means nothing.

With all due respect. I am stunned you are questioning my comment.

Stock futures are soaring and a stock with a market cap like this doesn't move 15 billion on a joke.

I guess with this board I shouldn't be surprised.

David, what does your comment have to do with the NSCC? Take your BS somewhere else.

F you.

We have a shot at a treatment. My BS. I don't own this stock. I just want life to return to normal.

You want sports to return. You want card shows to return. You need news like this.

I am a happy person and I have a great life.

Rich made a post about the NSCC, which was interesting and timely. Why are you talking about stocks? Start a new thread in the Watercooler thread. In case you forgot, this is a vintage card forum.

There won't be any card shows without a treatment. It is very relevant. Not sure how you don't get this.

David, what you posted seems like good news indeed, and everyone wants to go back to normal (I am soooo over this and would give anything to have it end). But this is a baseball card forum, and as such, serves as a small escape from the craziness of the day. To that end, perhaps non-direct/off topic statements (especially regarding coronavirus) should be reserved for the water cooler section. Just a friendly suggestion, not intended to be a shot or inflammatory.

I thought you guys would find it encouraging that some news came out that increases our chances of getting back to normal and going to a card show.

I would like to go to the National and I hope it takes place and unless we get some good news like this there is no shot it will.

For anyone who is hoping to go this is a glimmer of hope and more importantly a glimmer of hope for the well being of the world.

I dig and the info is good, but this thread/section just is not the place.

Meanwhile, I hope the National is still on; I would go (if my wife let me). But, I will bet dollars to dimes that there is no National this year.

You guys are a special bunch.

The idea that posting news that increases the chances it might take place is bad is beyond me.

Whatever.

The is the dumbest sh++ I have ever read on a message board.

Great news for all of us in real life and maybe live sports happen sooner rather than later and the card show in question might be able to move forward and it is bad.

I am just glad I don't take the sanctity of a message board this seriously. Unreal.

The board is literally refuting science now!

Hey guess what, that hospital ship and the javits center LARGELY EMPTY here in NY. No COVID ward. I can't speak for Atlantic city.
Lets just give up life as we know it since there could be a 2nd wave maybe then this years "flu" can catch last year's 80k deaths, CV only 35k now and is plateauing.

Wtf national is in 3 months.

You all sit inside until that 2nd wave passes

Thankfully we have already seen the peak and cases are tapering off. This drug by GILD has had incredible results and patients that were in horrible condition are improving in days and returning to their normal lives. We need stories like this to enable the economy and life to return. It isn't rocket science.

There won't be conventions if there aren't treatments that work and the sooner the medical community can produce results the sooner we all can enjoy life again outside of our homes.

Not to double-hijack this thread, but LBI is my favorite summer spot and am looking forward to the summer and Flamingo Golf, LexMex and old Barney.

And I think that I'd wait for Philly in September to start show-going again

Not likely to happen. Reasons include:

- NJ will still be viewed as a potential hot spot for the virus come late May or early June
- governor will likely keep restrictions in place for group events
- autographs will be diminished since athletes are going to be reluctant to attend
- attendance will be projected to be much lower since folks will be reluctant to attend
- therefore, dealers will also be reluctant to keep their commitment given the lower attendance that will be forecast
- overall chances of a good national (even if held) are low which reduces the prestige and goodwill of the national as a yearly event

As I understand it, this is a potential TREATMENT for sick people. If they are very sick in the hospital. Correct me if I’m wrong. Are you going to go to the National because someone says to you “hey, if you do get really sick and have to be hospitalized for a few weeks, there is now a good drug to treat you”. Uh, not me. I’ll avoid getting it altogether. Thanks. AIDS and Ebola have great treatment drugs. I don’t want them either.

The only way to get back to normalcy is a treatment.

This drug is curing people who are in really bad shape. Not the minor cases.

No one wants to get this thing but the only way the economy recovers is if there is a way to not lose lives due to this outbreak and this gives people confidence to go out in public.

There are countless pharmaceutical companies working day and night trying to get us to the other side of this issue.

Plenty of people on this board make their living from trading cards and they need public interaction to return and disposable income to exist to maximize their business opportunity. There is a reason the stock market is cheering and the futures are exploding higher.

Here don't believe me.

One of the top market analysts for years.

“An effective treatment is a huge deal and would create a path to open the economy and resume normal ‘social activities’ way sooner than a vaccine,” said Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors. “A treatment is safer and more scalable because it is only given to people who need to be treated.”

Thanks for the update and stock tip.

Will not speak for others but I live this threat every day. I am very motivated to stay up to date. I do not need some jerkoff telling me directly or indirectly how to respond to an off topic response, especially a hostile one, that is taking away from a hobby and diversion I truly need to stay sane.

Go away.

Rich
Thank you for the update.

What are the side effects? Is it really curing people or are they recovering on their own? Does it cause more good or harm in the long run? We have science and doctors that will determine if this is really the one or if it is something else being developed by someone else. It also isn't something that we will know in a few weeks or even months. I have cancelled plans to go to AC even if the show is a go. I will let science tell me when I can return to normal not any posts on a message board. Until then I will follow the CDC guidelines.

The way to get back to normalcy is to eliminate the possibility of a continuing or recurring pandemic. A treatment for people already gravely ill doesn't achieve that because it does nothing to lessen the number of cases. The only thing that achieves that end is to build herd immunity and the only ways to do that is either vaccinations or everyone getting the disease and not dying from it.

Well, if I want to understand matters of disease and public health, the first person I would talk to is a guy who wants to sell me stock in the pharmaceutical company.

In all seriousness, one of my virologist friends does think that remdesivir does show good potential, but is cautious in pumping it up as some miracle cure until the results from a number of clinical trials is available. And the Gilead results are very preliminary. I found a good article about the trial results that seems to take on the proper tone. Hopeful, but clear in that there is still a long way to go. And, for anyone familiar with the design of experiments, there is some language in there that will temper your enthusiasm. For example:
Mullane, while encouraged by the University of Chicago data, made clear her own hesitancy about drawing too many conclusions.

“It’s always hard,” she said, because the severe trial doesn’t include a placebo group for comparison.

I think most people will not listen to what these show promoters are saying. They are not going to attend any shows this year, period! When thousands of people around you are getting sick and dying, are you seriously going to take that risk - over sports cards?

This year is EFFED! See you all in 2021!

This is from the Politico Newsletter this morning. Politico is reasonably well centered in how they report about Washington (they try to keep down the middle as much as possible)

- STAT: "Early peek at data on Gilead coronavirus drug suggests patients are responding to treatment," by Adam Feurstein and Matthew Herper: "A Chicago hospital treating severe Covid-19 patients with Gilead Sciences' antiviral medicine remdesivir in a closely watched clinical trial is seeing rapid recoveries in fever and respiratory symptoms, with nearly all patients discharged in less than a week, STAT has learned.

"Remdesivir was one of the first medicines identified as having the potential to impact SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19, in lab tests. The entire world has been waiting for results from Gilead's clinical trials, and positive results would likely lead to fast approvals by the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies. If safe and effective, it could become the first approved treatment against the disease.

"The University of Chicago Medicine recruited 125 people with Covid-19 into Gilead's two Phase 3 clinical trials. Of those people, 113 had severe disease. All the patients have been treated with daily infusions of remdesivir

That's why David was talking about stuff moving overnight. I have no dog in this fight but he follows the market a lot closer than I do and this could be an important development.

Rich, the STAT article is the same one I linked to, and quoted above. The details buried well down in the article aren't nearly as sexy as the lede would suggest. I am generally a live and let live kinda guy. So, I am not going to tell anyone what to do. But, given that we are dealing with a health issue, I am going to put more weight on the opinion of my doctor than that of my stockbroker.

The stock broker isn’t telling anyone what to do. The stock broker was highlighting potentially very positive news for all of us.

I am very hopeful as a human they have success with these trials. Everyone should be.

Don’t really have a dog in this message board fight but diseases like this bring what’s important to the front. I’m deemed essential and I go home everyday praying I didn’t get it and that I don’t spread it to my family. Many topics end up on this page that honestly probably don’t fit the criteria for being here. Does it really need to escalate to the point of name calling and expletives? Dpeck, have no issue with what you did and I for one enjoy your posts.

Everyone please stay safe and healthy!

From my understanding, dealers are permitted to cancel and will receive a full refund. If I’m a dealer, this is a no brainer. Why would I incur all the expenses (travel, hotel, food, dealer fees) to set up at a significantly less populated national and risk obtaining the virus (through travel or at the convention)? The economic repercussions are only in the first inning. I don’t see the volume at the national this year. The lower volume does not justify the dealer fees which are based on an anticipated high volume. I predict a lot of dealers will cancel. I suspect a lot of expected attendees have already canceled. Not happening this year.

Comic-Con was cancelled. It has been going on for 50 years. It is usually at the end of July in San Diego.
