Not at all--meeting for 2 hours to talk cards was entertaining--this is ridiculous.

I guess there is more than one Niedermeyer.

Dan- how do you find all this Youtube stuff so quickly? You are like a walking encyclopedia of pop culture. Okay- can you find me a clip of the Yardbirds performing, preferably "Over Under Sideways Down", but any song will do. Thank you.

Stationed in Jax Florida in the mid 70's I was swallowed up by Southern Rock. Allmans, Skynyrd, ZZTop, Outlaws, Seger, Marshall T, Molly Hatchett, Blackfoot while sucking down cans of Busch.

When I'd arrive home to Boston, my friends were into disco, clubbing every night and that pricey white powder. How did we survive?.. Dan, got any vids?

I agree with Jim on this. If someone starts a thread, people who have an interest in the topic should post. Those with other interests should start their own thread. This board shouldn't be a place for those with nothing else to do to screw with someone.
BTW, Barry--you are a prime offender in this area.

During the course of this thread; we had a very peaceful lunch at Tin Star and discussed this thread amongst other hobby matters.

See, something good can come out of hijacked threads

I also think I make solid contributions to the board too, so once in a while I allow myself a little fun. Leon is free to pull the plug when he thinks it has gone too far!

Since I posted the song lyrics that put Jim and others into this hissy fit, I will respond:

First, I think you are missing the point of this: FUN!! All of the posts on this being a community are exactly on point. Many of us are friends or friendly and friends kick silly stuff around, share jokes, etc. Since the active posters live all over the country and do not see the whole group in person more than once or twice a year, we socialize here. Without the sort of social levity provided by common jokes, cultural references, etc., things quickly become stale, boring and hostile. Perhaps you prefer a deadly serious tone at all times; most of the people who post here do not, as is proven by the reaction that the occasional fun post provokes.

Second, I am tired of the self-important twaddle I read here with increasing frequency. These are baseball cards, for heaven’s sake! No one lives or dies over them. Most of us use them to relax and unwind, not solve the world’s crises. Did you ever stop to think that perhaps the vast majority of the active posters here (many of whom happily chime in on rock and tv trivia, for example), don’t give a damn about the issues that are important to you, but have the good social grace not to say so? A little humility, please.

Third, for anyone to post (and this isn’t the first time) that only some people here matter is not only incredibly arrogant; it is also astoundingly short-sighted. Consider this: I have cards that the “people who matter” would purchase, but I will not sell them to those people as a matter of principle, spite or whatever else you want to call it, because I do not like the way they treat others. Remember, I don’t have to do business with you and you don’t have to do business with me. I’d hazard a guess that most of the people who have the cards that the “people who matter” want to buy have sufficient assets that they don’t have to sell them. If your goal is to purchase top flight cards direct from their owners without going through an auctioneer, perhaps telling the general populace of this board that they are gum on your shoe isn’t the way to go. Hasn’t anyone ever told you that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar?

Jim, your chastising of Barry almost renders this thread a self-parody of your own behavior. I am stunned at the classic nature of this thread at this point. I believe we are nearing NYC Dinner Thread I status.

Everyone knew it was coming....you could see it a mile away. The oft maligned, but always appreciated, "train wreck day" on the board. From speaking with dozens of board members I guess about 80% or more enjoy the occasional wreck. It's really very harmless, imho. In a day or two it will all be cleaned up again...and everyone will quit rubber necking so much. Cards, again, will be the focus so until then sit back and relax......and remember...whatever you do........breathe

I do not want this thread to turn into a fight so if my posts are offensive I will stop. Please note I have contributed to almost every other topic on the board today, reported on our meeting last week, and spent the whole day Friday answering everyone's questions when nobody else who attended the meeting was willing to field them. Nevertheless, I will get back to baseball card matters... Hey, I'm easy.

Jim, as you know I support you on nearly all of your endeavors out here. I know that you take great pleasure in playing the victim on this board but surely you can't think I'm singling you out just to attack you? I'm singling you out because you started this thread and you chastised Barry publicly. I think you need to lighten up, Francis, and at least attempt to appreciate how you are perceived and why you are perceived the way you are. In keeping with the music-trivia nature of this very wonderful thread you have started, "50 Million Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong."

Warshawlaw,

On your rant,

1)Fun is not the main p[oint of it for me, it is the gathering and exchange of uaseful information and opinions about serious issues in the hobby.

2)Sorry--I think most posters do care about card restoration/alteration and a code of ethics for the hobby--if Leon wants to do a poll--"Do you care about the card restoration/alteration that is done in the hobby" I think that woulsd disprove your point.

3)Third, and you may not know this, I buy most of my cards and complete my sets from other collectors in private transactions. If you don't want to sell me cards I need--fine--I will survive.

Jim

Having an occassional off-topic pull to a conversation is OK as long as the topic is reasonably harmless (Seinfeld, Punk Music, Dinner in NY -- why is it that this always seem to involve that HATED New Yorkers)

The ones that get going are the ones about politics, religion or "moral" issues. Those can truly polarize a community.

I thought the punk music thread brought many of us together in a way we never had before as it showed interests outside of those pretty little cardboard pieces with pictures.

Leon IS a friend of mine but I think he does a great job of keeping the board on line -- with little twists and turns.

But Jim and Bruce, rest assured I do not intend to hijack many more threads -- this one exexmpted since this IS a free flowing thread already.

And to create one more turn -- here are a couple of questions for you all musically.

1) What is your favorite song -- Mine is (5/10/15/20/25/30) Years of Love -- by the Presidents (1970)

2) That was also a one-hit wonder and my 2nd favorite song is ALSO a one-hit wonder
Color Him Father -- Winstons

3rd Favorite One-Hit Song

Dave Loggins -- Please come to Boston

So please post either/or both or your favorite songs or your favorite one hit wonder

Regards
Rich

Jeff,

You can perceive me any way you want--I don't care. If you want to criticise me you have my e-mail address--this is not a board for personal attacks.

Barry,

As I said, overall, you make a substantial contribution to the board.

Two things you have said really are opposite of why I come to the board.

1. A while back you said you don't come here to make friends. I do.
2. You just said the point of the board is not to have fun. Actually, "yes" it is.

I guess we can agree to disagree on these 2 subjects.....

thanks

My favorite song is Common People by Pulp. I know that sounds like a smartass reply, but it honestly is. I love that song. Of course, I've had many favorite songs over the years. Red Hill Mining Town by U2, I hung My Head as done by Johnny Cash, London Calling by the Clash, I'm a Ram by Al Green. I could go on and on.

Rich,

Why can't you start your own thread about music if that is what you want to talk about? Based on the responses I am sure you will get hundreds of posts--even people who never post on cards post on music.

Jim, if you don't care about how you are perceived why do you constantly whine about being personally attacked? Surely you would just ignore it if it didn't bother you. I think you care a great deal. I just think you are unable to avoid alienating the very great majority of people who post here -- including those that support you.

And do you disagree that it is right to hijack serious posts that Bruce makes?

Let it go -- the winds will take this wherever the gods ascertain. This is one that we should probably just let go until it winds down -- I guarantee you that natural selection will end this soon enough

O/K -- Since Jim objects to music -- I just got my darling wife her valentine's day gift -- a quarter will sing to her -- what are you getting your wife or hubby or special one (if you are lucky enough to have one) for that day

Jeff,

Noone likes to be attacked for no reason--especially when they are trying to do good things for the hobby.

In my opinion its fine to talk about abortion or punk rock or whatever but do it in a separate thread so those of us that are interested in the topic can talk seriously about that topic.

Jim- I like baseball cards, I'm concerned about the issues that you are...and I also like to see the Rolling Stones jam with Howlin' Wolf...what can I tell you (thanks Dan- great footage). I think we can all lighten up a little, have some fun, and I have to be completely honest with you: baseball cards are not the most important thing in my life.

You also mentioned we shouldn't talk about abortion but when the issue came up you had a lot to say...how can you play both sides of the fence?
