Graig,
Forget the haters. If someone wins and doesn't want to wait, send it to me instead.
Btw, it looks spectacular. You did Jose serious justice although the other painter is definitely much hotter than you are.
Also, why did you not post the 27 Yanks to your On The Easel thread? I think it has been a while since that thread got some love buddy.
Mark

Oh damn. I forgot. I owe you some scans. Coming shortly.

At the same time though, if any of you have thoughts about it, I'd love to hear them, whether in a PM or here on the thread.

Anywho, I hope you're all still enjoying the process, and I'm looking forward to having a finished, professionally-photographed product to show y'all soon, and just as important, to put in Chris' patient hands!

Thanks, all.

100% enjoying the process. Only more pictures would have made it better.

As far as the raffling off another amazing painting. My only suggestion would be to add the expected time till completion. Whether it is 2 months or 2 years, whatever you are comfortable with. We all have different expectations and a soft expected finishing date would take care of the only concern that has ever been brought up.

I know I would buy a spot like I have in the others.

Ben North,
In regards to painting with the detail the last one had, it would be difficult for Graig to give a soft date with any kind of close accuracy, and to put a soft date on any of his paintings would cause him to worry about getting it done on a deadline. I know I wouldn't want Graig rushing to get any painting of mine done. Why tamper with success. No, a soft deadline would not work out well. Maybe a few more postings, but we all know how busy Graig must have been.

In regards to having another raffle, it is all up to Graig, he knows whenever he needs me, I will be there. But he has a lot on his table right now, as do I.

If I were to be lucky enough to win such a raffle, the only thing I'd sweat would be the pressure of choosing the one image I'd most want painted.

Graig - that's incredible! I almost expect the bat to land. So realistic!

Proud to have you as a fellow member.

I hope that some day, I'll have one of your works to hang in my Baseball Room.

Thank you so very much for sharing the details of the process...very enlightening.

Definitely have another raffle! Whatever the time frame, it looks to be well worth it! I'm still bummed about missing out on winning the last raffle. If only 3 people at that game had just stayed home.....

Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for all of the kind comments, as well as the words of encouragement about the raffle stuff.

I think in regards to the latter, I'll just have to re-evaluate where things are later on in the year or in early 2018. I do try my best to have these things and push the winner's painting closer to the front of the queue, but the older stuff can (and needs to) get in the way sometimes. This Bautista painting was definitely an example of that, and compounded with familial obligations, it just got finished later than I would have hoped it to.

However, I'm happy that Chris will be receiving his painting soon. I'm planning on bringing Jose in to be photographed tomorrow, so I imagine it'll be on its way next week.

Here's the finished, varnished piece:

And a couple of details:

The fun stuff happened with Bautista's helmet and hand. With that helmet, it was important for it to FEEL like plastic. So, light was going to shine on it differently than it would cloth. You'd have harsher highlights with fewer halftones in-between, as well as sharper edges where those highlights are. Also, since the lights in the stadium are traditionally cooler in temperature, the light on everything will appear a bit more blue than it might in sunlight. In some of those highlights, I played with some complimentary oranges on those edges to really make them pop more.

It was a similar kind of thinking for Jose's hand, but the edges were treated a bit differently, and since I wanted that feature to stick out a bit (since it's in front of his body as far as space is concerned). I was able to play with a few of the complimentary colors there as well.

The same kind of thinking went into the painting of the bat. Well, the same kind of thinking in regards to the highlights and how light falls on it. The tempered wood is a harder, slicker surface than cloth, so it's also going to have light fall on it a bit differently than other materials. I also pushed the texture and impasto on the bat, hoping to make it pop more.

The most important thing was pushing that crowd back, though. That's something that involved more edge manipulation than anything else, and maybe a bit of chromatic color control. By juxtaposing the sharp bat against the fuzzy shapes of that crowd, hopefully it creates the illusion of depth, as well as draws your eye to it before anything (or at least secondary to Jose).

The detail of the legs was to show all of the different kind of stuff that went into that lower part of the painting - all of the different textures that were a challenge to paint. The smooth cleats had to look different than the rough dirt of the batter's box, and so on.

Anywho, I'll post the professionally shot image once I receive it, and maybe some details from that as well.

If any of y'all have any questions or comments, feel free to chime in.

As always, thanks for reading.

Graig

Great job. And thanks for providing a description of some of the factors that went into painting certain aspects differently. Makes me appreciate it that much more.

Graig,

It's been a tad more than a year since the last raffle. Now that this has come to an end, maybe it's time for the 4th?

I'll take the first spot...

I’ve convinced myself that it there is too much uncertainty around the authenticity of the ball (oh, and that it is already many $1,000’s out of my collecting budget ) to bid.

While I want to believe that all parties are telling the truth, the fact that one can still purchase a MLB authenticated, game used ball from the 2015 Post Season from the Jays for under $50, and remove the sticker, swapping it out for the actual ball (keeping said HR ball) and selling the dupe with the offered after-the-fact notarized statement - I just can’t feel comfortable.

Here’s my 2015 Post Season game ball from the Jays. I paid $37 for it 6 months ago.

My concerns exactly (and I feel you regarding the price )

Not sure why the home run baseball was not immediately authenticated - many/most other milestone or significant baseballs these days are MLB authenticated.

I wondered that very same thing, outloud, with a couple of my baseball loving, non-collector buddies in the room and they had no idea what I was talking about. It’s a shame for the consignor that the original owner had no one in the section etc tell him he could ask for a MLB sticker on site, as it would go a long way to helping many feel much more comfortable with the ball. Perhaps Leaving a lot of $ on the table? Who knows? There are plenty of deep-pocketed collectors and Jays fans in this country.

Little things weigh against this too, like the fact that the “Stat. Dec.” from the consigner has a different spelling of his last name than on the notarized document. Typo, no doubt, but for $16k and climbing, I would expect all the “I’s”to be dotted and “t’s” crossed perfectly.

MLB doesn't authenticate a ball that goes into the stands UNLESS its a major milestone ball (500th HR, 2000th hit, 3000th hit, etc) and in that case they use specially marked baseballs for that players at bat.. So if the ball does go into the stands, they will know if its the real ball or not.

Not the case. I have collector friends that have asked for and obtained the precence of a MLB authenticator while in the stands with a game ball in Toronto and also at Yankee Stadium. This has happened for a player’s first career HR ball that no one knew when it would be hit.

Ok and in that case its a special situation because its the players first career homerun. In any other case, they're not gonna hologram it

Chris,
FYI, the eventual winner of the ball is going to be Getty Lee from Rush.
Perhaps you are aware that Lee is Canadian & he has an extensive collection of historic baseballs in his collection. It's pretty difficult to outbid Rockstar money and I speak from experience. Just sayin'.

A few years ago I was an underbidder in the Heritage Platinum auction in NY that included Johnny Vander Meer's personal last out balls from his back to back no-hitters in 1938. Getty Lee won both of those balls for over $42K

Cool (not the getting outbid by him part, Scott)! Geddy is a Jays season ticket holder and good Toronto lad. Perhaps the ball goes to the Jays or to the CBBHOF for display?

My buddy, a diehard Rush fan lives beside Geddy’s brother, Allan in the High Park area of Toronto and the guys attend Jays games together over various seasons. My friend Dallas and Allan were in Geddy’s “In the Action Seats” for Verlander’a no-no in 2011. Geddy’s was on tour and had given his tix to his brother and they were texting back and forth during the game - Geddy not believing that he was missing the first no-no at Rogers Centre! Geddy’s brother is behind the guy holding up his phone and Dallas is to Geddy’s brother’s right.

I wasn't aware of any of that. I see this morning it sold for $28,000. That's a lot more than I thought it'd sell for.

Hopefully, as said, Geddy Lee won it so it stays in Canada.

Chris,
Sorry you couldn't win that bidding war, but no matter who won that ball, they don't have a Kreindler painting of the event.

His real name is 'Gary'. Check out the Dan Rather interview. Gary has a really nice baseball memorabilia collection and he shows some of his favorite pieces to Rather on the show.

Yep, Gary Lee Weinrib, perhaps didn’t sound as rock ‘n roll as he ultimately wanted.
