Hey all, here's one to revive this thread. The caveat is that I'm a HORRIBLE photographer, and my basement studio doesn't lend itself nicely to shooting. With that in mind, please understand that it's not a good representation of the painting. Once I get it photographed, I'll post the professionally-done photo.

Anywho, here's an 11"x14" portrait of the Iron Horse from 1936. It comes from Conlon's extensive library - man I'm falling in love with his shots all over again!! I just love how well he uses his natural light, especially with showing the reflection of the skies on each player's skin. Or at least, that's how I interpret what I'm seeing.

Yeah, so, I was thinking of doing a series of portraits of the '36 Yankees and Giants, and I thought this would be as good as a start as any.

From the Hunt Auctions DiMaggio estate. Supposedly this one graced Joe D's home den.

(sorry for the thumbnail - I kept the image in the same frame as Joe had, so no scan)

I also have some others, original frames, not scanned

1. Original Yankee team photo, Opening Day 1924
2. Ruth and Gehrig embracing, post Gehrig speech
3. Countless 1920s Yankee team photos

Graig awesome painting looks great !! Also wanted to mention I was just out in Boston and my wifes cousin took me to the Brockton bowling alley to see a bunch of Rocky Marciano photos and news clippings they have in a display case. They also had some nice Teddy Ballgame photos and also had an 8x10 photo of Ruth and Gehrig shrugged up on a wall which I assume was fenway park, and in old pen ink someone wrote 1931. I have never seen this photo before and maybe it is the original. It was a great photo and would make a super cool painting as they both were smiling. I asked the guy working if it was original and he had no idea.

Default Gehrig Autographed Ball Inscribed by him 1927

Official A.L. ball autographed by Gehrig and inscribed in his hand "Aug 19, 1927". Originally from Barry Halper collection.

... and given by the Yankees to Derek Jeter this evening as a gift for passing Lou Gehrig as the all time Yankee hit leader!

Here's one of the most incredible Gehrig pieces I've seen, one of the very few letters in existence dating from after his July 4, 1939 farewell speech. The content is unbelievable. I'll let it speak for itself. It realized just over $31,000 in the May 2007 Heritage Auctions Signature auction.

Default 1939 All Star Game at Yankee Stadium...

This game was played exactly one week after Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech of July 4th, 1939.

The All-Star Game came to the House that Ruth Built for 1939 and honorary captain Lou Gehrig watched the AL win a tightly contested 3-1 game behind a Joe DiMaggio homer.

Twenty-year-old Bob Feller, the Tribe's rookie fireballer, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam and hurled 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball to close out the AL's win.

Ticket Stub from said game...

It's not just Gehrig here but I think it fits the theme well because it's pretty incredible to see his face on a 1939 Hall of Fame-related collectible, considering he was inducted that year by special ballot. This great sign is going to sell this Friday (April 23) in the Heritage auction.

It just occurred to me that I ought to show my 1923 Yankees signed ball.
It contains what is certainly one of the earliest Gehrig signatures in the hobby--he was only up with the big team for a few weeks in '23.

That's his signature right under Johnson's on the side panel.

Jimmy,
Beautiful photo of Lou's swing in motion! My favorite part of the photo is his footwork. There's alot of power in that weight shift. If Lou played golf like the Babe (I don't know if he did or not), I suspect that he would hit his drives a mile. Nice!

Don't think I've shown these before.

Signed spring training photo of Gehrig with a young boy:
