Default Leleands Summer 2010 pick-up...

I took a chance on this one as Lelands didn't show a scan of the reverse (no surprise there).

Lot 1097: Ruth Hugs Gehrig On His Day

ITEM DESCRIPTIONEvent: June 2010 Catalog
Category: Photo Collection > Baseball
Reserve: $100.00
Auction: 6/8/2010 12:00:00 AM EST - 7/9/2010 9:00:00 PM EST
Winning Bid: $302.50
Price Realized: $361.49
Number of Bids: 9

Press photograph of Babe Ruth hugging Lou Gehrig as the New York Yankees honored him by celebrating "Lou Gehrig Day" on July 4, 1939. Photo still has the paper caption on the verso. There is a small chip in the lower right corner and some creasing on the upper right and lower left corners. 7 x 9". VG.

1939babelouhuggingLargeImage.jpg

And was THRILLED to see the stamping and slug of the back!

1939babeandlouVERSO.jpg

That bluish ACME stamp dates this photo to 1935-40.

Which Equals... a TYPE I photo of Babe and Lou on July 4th, 1939 for $361.49 !

Been awhile since I made a score this big. Who says there ain't no more deals to be had?

Holy canoli, Jimmy. I would have imagined that you'd need to add another zero to the end of that price to make it seem 'legit'. The contrast and clarity seem wonderful, too. FANTASTIC stab.

Here are two images I've had in my archives for a while now. They're not originals, but I've always loved the images, and you can be sure they'll find their way onto the canvas. The first comes from a game at Comiskey, probably from '36-'37, while the other is from Fenway sometime in 1935. Gehrig is pictured next to rookie Babe Dahlgren - the man who would replace him in the lineup over four years later. What a painting that would make!!

Speaking of paintings, I don't know if I ever posted these to this thread. The first is from Conlon's famous 1936 photo, and the second, we see Gehrig on the bench watching the same Dahlgren play in his spot.

Hell Ben. You've had a lot more than a "couple" deals over the years!

Jimmy -

I mean this in the nicest way...that deal is ridiculous!

I have a Type 2 of that image (stamping indicates post-1940) that I paid more for than you paid for that sweet Type 1.

Good for you and thanks for sharing!

Jimmy, Bottom L looks "rookie"... Stunning!

1936 League MVP's Lou & King Carl. Together for the October Time magazine article. (I'm fairly certain.)

Good call Steve! It's actually the first photo ever taken of Gehrig in a Yankee uniform.

A single page from the New York Evening Post newspaper dated June 14, 1923. This original 17"x 21" sports page has a large photo of Lou Gehrig saying that he "NOW WEARS A YANKEE UNIFORM."

Gehrig joined the Yanks midway through the 1923 season and made his debut on June 15, 1923, as a pinch hitter.

Alright now. It's been 11 months since the last post in this thread and it's now time to bring back the Iron Horse! So let's see your Gehrig pick-ups from 2011. Even if you showed them in other threads. It doesn't matter... show them again!

An extremely scarce, high-grade Advertising Order Form for the 1940 Book "Lou Gehrig - Baseball's Iron Man" by Stan W. Carlson...

1940GehrigBookOrderFormWithOrigEnvelope2.jpg1940GehrigBookOrderFormWithOrigEnvelope1.jpg

And many thanks to Max (baseballart) for reassuring that it indeed is an original piece and for his tremendous knowledge and scan of the book that I will be on the hunt for in 2012.

BTW... Max was kind enough to send me a link to his remarkable Baseball Book Collection, and I was just floored by the vast amount of Books that have been written on the Grand Old Game over the last 120 or so years. And get this, the link Max sent me had only about 1/3 of his collection scanned for viewing at this time!

I hope Max doesn't mind if I share his link to his amazing Baseball Book Collection. I really had no idea of what was really out there. Take a look.

Some more Gehrig stuff, most of which I think I've posted in other threads.

Jennifer's Reflections series of Lou --he is reversed in the image, so you have to look in the mirror to see the correct image

Pride of Japan, Japanese edition

Title from Putnam Sports Shelf series

Large size poster from Graham's book, which doesn't match any dj of the book I've seen

Underbid a while back at Heritage. Meanwhile the new owner slabbed it. Oh, well. Still, happy to get it this time around.

Being that Lou is what I collect, it's not a surprise that this would be the thread of Jimmy's that I resurrect.

While rereading some of his posts 3 things strike me.
1) how much stuff of all varieties he collected. It is amazing the variety of things that were in his collection at one time.
2) how much stuff of his that I now own, including one of my favorite photos below. As you can he posted it above and traded it to me the following your I think.

3) Having nothing to do with Jimmy, but I am noticing how much i hate photobucket for screwing everything up with their ridiculous change in policies regarding 3rd party hosting. Now we are stuck with all these dead links.

Default Gehrig Conlon

Jimmy and I talked about this one at length when it was in Christies. We both agreed it was a MUST for the collection. Also used for card and all the fixings on the back.

Love that Lou and Walsh son right? I remember when he let that go. Great photo and glad you have part of his original collection. Great that many of his pieces went to many of those he helped.
Here is my latest Lou pickup.. 1927 Van Oeyen
