I also worry about the sustainability of exorbitant prices for cards that are common in the literal sense (e.g., just about any Topps base card).

A couple things to keep in mind...

1) There are 30% more people in US now than there were in 1990, and the trend will continue. Theoretically, more people = more potential fans/collectors, aka increased demand.

And 2) Are there a lot of these cards out there? You bet. But there will continue to be floods, fires, and all sorts of other events that, over the decades, will wipe out collections, aka decreased supply.

I am also in my 30s, but not worried one bit about cardmageddon...at least not in our lifetime anyways.

Check Out Hunts PSA 8 Centered Mantle it's only at $160k ish with one day to go. Granted the one corner doesn't look like a 8, this leads me to believe the high dollar investor is getting out of this Market. I think there is gonna be a lot of fear after during/after the National. Just my two cents. Idk lol

Need to wait till auction ends unless you believe there is zero action at end of auction when most would argue the opposite is true.

If the card goes lower than most 8s it may mean that the high dollar investors may be getting out of the Market on PSA 8 Mantles with a terrible corner...all psa 8s arent alike... lol

Cant say 'Granted the one corner doesnt look like a 8' and then go on and forget saying that. Its the same thing as saying 'I cant believe the Cavaliers lost to the Celtics in 6 games this year, granted Lebron James didnt play'

I'm not worried about cardmageddon either.

When little league ball begins to decrease, and the interest isn't there, then I'll be concerned. ( Golf is in serious trouble ) Will all of those kids grow up and collect?

Not all, but some will.

Most of them collect in some form or another right now though. They all have their favorite players, and present collecting habits can lay the foundation for more expensive interest in card collecting down the road.

Definitely seeing a downward trend, a previous PSA 8 just recently sold for $462K. Buyers market if you have the change.

Not all PSA 8's are created equal. The Memory Lane Mantle was a newly graded example, with really sharp corners. They are both beautiful, but the buyer of the Memory Lane version was willing to step up and pay more for what they believed to be a better example. Here they are, but it's hard to tell from these scans. If you go to the auction sites you can really examine the corners. The Hunt's Mantle is shown first, then the Memory Lane version.

The Hunt Mantle is much better centered.

$180K difference is pretty significant for the same technical grade.

Also a psa 8 with worse centering sold in February 2017 in heritage for $660k. That's a $380k difference compared to the hunt auctions one for the same grade.
