I can't understand the premium that PSA gets on most of SGC cards. You would think that if it is a NM SGC you could pay the cost of getting it PSA'ed and come out way ahead.

What am I missing?

Depends on the set as well. Alot of the prewar cards don't carry that premium.

The premium is usually because PSA has been around longer and is bigger, and the PSA registry. I used to also think that PSA was stricter on centering for the high grade, but I just compared the centering requirements, and they actually look pretty much the
same. Anyway, as mentioned, the premium isn't there for all prewar cards.

Jeff is absolutely right. The PSA registry creates a larger demand, hence the premium.

I agree the registry explains price differences on commons. I am not so sure it is the only explanation for price differences on star cards, which we certainly see in post-war cards.

No doubt that's why cards get into PSA holders in the first place, but I personally don't buy PSA cards to compete on the registry (although I did recently register something for the first time). I buy them because I like my slabs to match, and the cards I collect are much, much, much more readily available in PSA holders (I suppose because of the registry, but also because they've been around longer).
