Default Big Men... Girlie Names

Posted By: T206Collector

My wife and I often try to come up with names for our next child. For boys, I always suggest names from the T206 set, and I get shot down all the time because the names are a wee bit girlie. Have you ever noticed that guys used to be named after girls back then?!?!?!

Sherry Magie
Christy Mathewson
Ginger Beaumont
Lena Blackburne
Kitty Bransfield
Heinie Berger/Wagner/Zimmerman
Patsy Dougherty
Peaches Graham
Topsy Hartsel
Solly Hofman
Vive Lindaman
Dots Miller
Molly Miller
Dolly Stark

If you wanted to name your new child after one of the players in the T206 set, why not try Honus? That should go over well in the playground.

The only problem with what you said it that none of those names you listed are the actual guys first names.Theyre all nicknames or versions of their real names like Solly is really Solomon and Sherry is Sherwood which isnt a name id want to give a kid either

Whatever you do, don't name a son after the legendary Washington Post sportswriter Shirley Povich!

A favorite story of mine is when Mickey Mantle was discussing how big of a fan his father was of Mickey Cochrane and how his dad named him after Cochrane, Mickey told the reporter: "thank god he didn't know his real name was Gordon."

There was a 200+ pound Pro Bowl running back named Marion Butts. Many times I thought, with a name like Marion Butts you'd better be a 200+ pound NFL football player.

I think Butts was good friends with NFLer Harry Colon.
