Default T206 Cobb on ebay - "Best Job Authenticating a Fake" Award

Posted By: Joann

Hahahaha. hahaha. I've never posted one of these 'fake this or that on ebay' links - too many to keep up with. But this one takes the cake.

How about the letter from the dealer? Think he may be unhappy about having his letter shown in its entirety on ebay? I love the part where he advises on how much the seller will get compared to book, and the selling helps and hints. Then pretty much says ... uhh I think these may be fakes. lolol At least this advisor had the presence of mind to try to call the company that issued the Cert of Auth.

Oh, and the "Certificate of Authenticity" is boilerplate, and for an autograph!

Sorry - I know we pollute the board with too many of these. But this one was so funny I couldn't resist piling on.

Forget the Cobb, that letter is priceless.

"If the card is fake the buyer will be unhappy." I hate it when authenticators generalize!

i think his authenticator/card dealer sells the new shiny stuff. and doesn't really have much vintage knowledge. we've all been to the shop where the card is priced NM and is in VG and the dealer says it's in great shape for it's age. anyway it's funny how the card dealer says the aaron could be fake because it's so nice!
seller claims don't know much about sports cards yet bought 1955 topps lot?

Read the COA. It's for an autograph.

Wow. "I_buy_fake_cards" got into the action and it only took about 90 minutes for the seller to cancel the bid. Shoot. Now no one would see it unless they look at the Bidder History.

Likely, _ibuy_'s been blocked, as usual. This sheister is a classic.

Check out the crook's other auction -drawing even heavier bids.

I saw that auction yesterday -- if you read the "expert documentation" it basically says the card is fake.

But just when I-buy-fake-cards is pulled, stew-p-dazzo (say that three times quickly, and you'll get it) puts in a bid.

In the Aaron listing the seller says they don't know much about cards. Then, when you look at their feedback, it shows a Positive from a seller who sold them 75% of the 1955 Topps baseball set.

So, they don't know much about cards but bought 3/4 quarters of a set anyway. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

CROOKS!!!!!!!!!

Just to let everyone know, I talked to the people running the auction and they had originally purchased the Cobb and a M. Brown for $30 and thought they had struck it rich. They sent scans of the Brown and pulled the auctions after I broke the bad news.

I really think it was an honest mistake.

I too talked to the seller again, and this time detailed why the Cobb card was not real in my opinion. Apparently a ton of people contacted him about the card for the same reasons and he did say he was pulling the auction.

"Mr. Dazzo, we have cancelled your bid on the Cobb and Aaron cards because several people have brought it to our attention that they may be fake. We are working on revising the description to note that they may be fake cards, but that feature is temporarily unavailable. We will update both auctions as soon as we can."

Sad really, the poor guy's dream had crumbled. I hope he gets hi $30 back
