I've seen these listed a lot recently from this seller. It's not exactly clear what he's selling. Is it a sealed box of t206 reprints with one real buyback inserted randomly? Is this a homemade item or a truly "factory-sealed" product?

I hate poorly written eBay descriptions!

I'm thinking he bought a few good sized lots of beat T206s and has packaged them with a handful of better cards added in.

A vague listing, but if you can find say 500 beaters at an average of 10- 15 bucks each and add a few tough backs, even at an added cost of maybe 10K total? Then sell them for fifty bucks a card..... Works out to a $7500 net less Ebay fees. Even more beaters and it's better still.

Not a bad angle if you've got the time, or if you have a load of crummy T206s you bought even cheaper years ago.

It appears to be a poorly executed version of the OP's idea in this thread:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?p=1032725

If there were nice packaging and a list of exactly what has been distributed in packs it could be a good idea.

Maybe I have trust issues b/c I simply don't believe that what's going into these boxes is anything other than trash. If you read his 'refund policy,' he begins to cover his @ss right from the get go. To each his own....

From the listing:

'No Refunds offered unless cards are damaged. No Buyers Remorse Refunds will be given. If you aren't confident with your bid, then don't bid please. If you end up pulling a card that is worth less than the box, still no refunds given. Many companies such as Topps, Panini, UD, and others don't give any refunds besides replace single cards on damaged cards.'

*Please leave feedback based on shipping, etc as I only list the boxes.

Well you could always get this card for $50... (a card he recently bought for $14.99)

Yeah, he's covering himself just the way Topps and UD and whoever else is left does these days.

I didn't say I'd be buying any, just what I thought his angle was.

Sort of an advanced version of the typical flea market or even retail "package of cards for $X" ---Sealed team set bag or maybe 50ct plastic box with a star or semi star on the top and bottom, and the rest almost guaranteed to be VG 88 Donruss. (Retail is usually 100 cards in a slick package for 5-6 bucks)

I do buy those retail ones once in a while, usually if it looks like there's a card I like on top or a bunch of something I collect inside. You get pretty good at recognizing some sets in a random stack. I had a big surprise in my last one. A 1965 common! Oldest card I've ever seen in one of those packages.

Other great cards you could have bought for less than $20... or now for $50:

Or here is one of those rare backs you can have for $50:

Click on any above photo to see how much the seller of these $50 packs paid for any of the cards.

what do you think the odds are you actually could pull a drum.

zero percent or less than that?

how many people do you think would actually buy this, thinking that the odds

are greater than zero percent?

he doesn't even have an image of his product.

Looking through the cards he has purchased (and displayed a few above) there isn't a single card he has bought for more than $20... maybe he figures with enough profit eventually he can buy one just so that someone will say they got one, but even if that is his plan I doubt he would follow through figuring that flipping cards for at least a $30 profit every time is good enough.

Is that the buyer's loophole? Wouldn't anything with a crease, mark, rounded corners, etc be considered "damaged"?

Interesting idea. My biggest concern (there are definitely other concerns) is that he does not even post a picture of the product. As a potential customer I want to see an image of the item I am buying (or at least a stock photo).

Just look at his past buys, that is what you are getting. An authentic or 1 graded card that isn't worth anything near the $50 asking price.

I couldn't make out what exactly he was selling (although it sure looks like a scam) so I asked

Dear hooters666,
Hi

What is in the box? A random slabbed T206? What else?

thanks
- obcbobd

Dear obcbobd,

It's 1 graded or authenticated t206 per box. Thats all.

Wow, that is appalling. If anyone wants to send me $50 I will pull one of my random, low-grade T206s off the shelf and mail it to you in a special box. Actually, it won't even be a special box. Just a box with a card in it.

This whole deal has been driving me nuts.....I opted to contact 'hooters666' or 'Breasts of the Devil?'

Anyway, I've yet to hear from him....not that I expect much.

"Why are there no scans of examples of what you are providing in your 'New Product Release?' Let me answer, b/c all you are offering is trash T206's. Not HOF's, not rare backs, etc. I know what I'll receive. It's as simple as looking at your purchase history. This is a very shady business practice that preys on the unsuspecting and uneducated in regards to early tobacco cards and is just plain bad business. This is obvious as referenced by the feedback of the two (51 & 69) who've purchased/won from you. This type of thing doesn't fly in the vintage collecting community and rest assured that there will come an end to this. Enjoy it while you can. Good day."

A little 'posturing' on my part but trash like this listing makes me fume. The sad thing is...there is no reason he can't continue selling this way.

"Grab bag" auctions are not allowed on eBay, which is technically what this is. If enough people report him...

Unfortunately, I don't believe his listing falls into the 'grab bag' area. You will receive a graded T206.....albeit trash, which is the only claim he makes. With a grab bag, you get a handful of unknown junk and aren't guaranteed one of the 'big' cards that may or may not be included.

A fine line but he seems to skirt it.

I think he did cross the line when he put "Young? Cobb" in the title. At that point he did turn it into a grab bag. Either way ebay won't stop it.

I have to admit that I was wrong when I said ebay won't stop it. They did. I had reported it as a chance listing (as I am sure others did too) and it has been pulled.

Of Course that didn't stop him from re-listing with a quick 24 hour auction
