Default Summer Reading List

Looks like I will be spending a lot of time this summer again in the hospital with my wife who is battling cancer. Any suggestions on any good baseball books to read? Was thinking about picking up the book on the 33 inning minor league game between Pawtucket and Rocherster. Others?

I am sorry to hear about your wife, I hope that she kicks cancer's ass.

I read a well-written, well-researched, and very enjoyable book about a great player and person: Walter Johnson. This book is also cool because it was written by Walter's grandson, Net54 board member Hank Thomas (hi Hank).

Been mentioned on the site before but a great baseball read, Crazy 08. You`ll recognize just about every player mentioned and it`s almost like re -living the entire season. Best of luck this summer. P S a quick 200 page weekend read, "The Ball", the trials and tribs of a couple of guys trying to corner the market on the Sosa McQuire balls as they chased the HR record.

I'm reading Crazy 08 right now, so I second this.

Laughter is always good medicine.

You may want to pick up 'The Yogi Book'

Your wife and family are in my thoughts and prayers,
Raymond

Thanks for the plug, Bryan, much appreciated. And I certainly share the hope about the best possible outcome for his wife.

Prayers and very best wishes to you and your wife. I would recommend "Ted Williams, an American Hero," by Leigh Montville. Just finished reading it for the second time since it came out in 2004 or so, and enjoyed it at least as much the second time.

"The Glory of Their Times" is also a very good one if by chance you haven't read it yet.

May both of you always be blessed,

Larry

I’m sitting in T.G. Hospital with my beautiful daughter facing the same fight for the second time. As for books my taste is a bit different but I highly recommend the following literary medicine as human, entertaining, and thought provoking. They were just the type of distraction I needed the first time my daughter stood up to cancer.

Hang in there my friend and stay in the moment. I will add you to my prayers.

My goodness gentlemen, please take care Mac and Mike. My very best thoughts and prayers for your loved ones.

Sunday Afternoons at Garfield Park by Lyle Kenai Wilson is a great read.

The Fireside Book of Baseball. It is like 5 or 6 volumes, so pick any volume and you will love it. This is about the 10th thread I have suggested this book and nobody seems to agree with me. Has anyone here ever read this book?

More importantly, I am praying for you and your wife.

So sorry to hear about your wife. I pray for a speedy recovery.

As for books, any of the Roger Angell anthologies are superb.
