Default Fake T206 EPDG

Posted By: Adam

Unless I am missing something, there has never been a green EPDG back. This is a real shame, more people should report these things to eBay as fraudulent listings so they get pulled. What is most troubling is the Q & A at the bottom where the seller insists it is authentic. Very frustrating.

I like that the current high bidder has a NEGATIVE 1 feedback, never seen that before.

Might be a member here that bids on fakes so no one will get stuck with it.

I just got an email from the guy selling this fake card. He now agrees it is not authentic and claims he is going to end the auction. Too bad, the current bidder (it's not me) seems to be willing to pay anything for it!

What terrific work Net54ers did today! One down, who knows how many more to go . . .

I'm almost positive the bidder youareascamartist is a board member. He was high bidder on the last fake card auction that was posted on Net54. I think it's great. Ebay will suspend you if you do something so evil like warn a bidder that they are bidding on a fake card. What else can you do? Kudos to youareacamartisrt .

I agree that bidder, whoever they may be, did a great service. The underbidder appears to be a legitimate collector who bid a whopping $139 for that fake card. So $139 of someone's money was saved. That's a good day. Bravo.

Gents. I saw a number of weird color variation backs a few years ago (won them in an ebay auction). They had things like a red old mill, etc. When the cards arrived they were about double the thickness of a standard T206 and the printing gloss was much more in line with 1980s printing than turn of the century techniques. I returned these cards as fakes and believe that the one posted on here was a fake as well, likely from the same batch of poor quality repros.

Now this one is more challenging I think -- real or fake T206 Cobb Green? Why?

(Edited to add Ted Z. just indicated in another posting that it is fake, so case closed!)

Dont see anything wrong? Ignoring the back even, the front text of the team and name designation is clearly black and not gark brown like its supposed to be, CLEAR reprint, not even designed to fool anyone, cmon folks.

Its as fake as a $3 bill. I think there is a site out there that can teach new collectors about reprints and real cards. I have not seen it in a while and forgot the name.

Maybe google something about detecting fake baseball cards and it might come up.

Goodluck

Rob,

As a courteous answer to your legitimate question:

The name/team font on reprints is black and the letters are close together. Here is an example:

The font on the front of a real card is brown with more spacing between the letters. It has a more graceful and less harsh look.

To be honest, the scan of the Bender card on ebay is so bad I can't really make out for sure what color it is. But it does appear to be missing the black border around the image, as some reprints do.

Here is a scan of a reprint of the same Bender, just to compare font and overall look:

And a link to a real card, similar Bender:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1910-T206-Chief-Bender-H-O-F-no-trees-SGC-80-EX-MT_W0QQitemZ270130888740QQihZ017QQcategoryZ57993QQ rdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

I'm pretty sure that the second scan above with a zoom view of the real font came from someone on this board, who helpfully posted it when someone else asked the same question. I used to ask things like this all the time, and was grateful for the help. Oddly, I don't think I can remember a single time back in those days that anyone suggested that I was stupid for not knowing it already. My my.

Joann

I'm sorry everyone - I misread Mark T's post ... I thought he was questioning whether the Bender in the SGC holder was a fake. I can see that the Bender w/the EPDG back is fake.

EPDG Bender - In addition to the font color & spacing, to me it looked like the possibilty of glue on the front borders, and w/such a dirty front you'd have to wonder why the back is so perfect.

But i do appreciate the extra advice on spotting fakes!

Rob

I think Rob was asking about the second Bender that Mark T was posting a link to. The one in the SGC holder is a real one. Mark was just showing a comparison of the real one to the fake EPDG back Bender.

Also look at the colors. Real T-206's are vibrant. The fakes are less colorful and almost grainy looking.
