Default Hey, pennant guys

I'd love to see a thread get started where we all post a pennant pic or two (every week until we run out )

Who knows if this might happen?....especially since I'm a new guy ....but here's one of mine....thoroughly trashed but very seldom seen that I know of:

That's a great pennant Rob.

Here's one of mine, it's a bit newer, but I like it :

Default Vandy

I picked this up at last year's National in Chicago and it's still one of my favorites of 2013. This is an exceedingly rare pennant of Johnny Vander Meer circa 1938. My thought is that it was perhaps sold at the All Star Game in Cincinnati.

I'm not a huge pennant guy in my own collection, but I do love to look at them.

Hey, Scott - it would be cool if you could somehow prove your ASG hypothesis (e.g. find a photo match). What dimensions are that pennant? It looks like the proportions are a bit different than most pennants

The only two Giants pennants (that I know of) that show SEALS Stadium, rather than Candlestick. The only difference between the two is the font thickness. I have always called this the "cartoon font" and it later appeared on some really good looking 1960s pennants...

^^^^ Nice!

I really like the lower two. Here's a Giants pennant (that I don't have )....it is very similar to your Reds example and one year removed. I wonder if the company did similars in 1960, 1963, etc....

Rob,
I've thought that and I'm always looking for 1938 All Star Game photos for that reason. The dimensions of my pennant are 12" x 24". I'm not sure if that's unusual or not to be honest with you.

I just know I like it!

Never seen that Giants variation... wow!

I thought the Reds had a monopoly on that style (there are 2 other Reds variations, albeit not as rare as the one above).

Here is my contribution for the day...

Those dimensions are rather unusual...your pennant is 2:1, length to width...most "full size" or "3/4" pennants are closer to 3:1.

I'll make it my mission to find that 1938 ASG photo

edit: now that I've seen Mark's 1919 pennant, maybe the 3:1 ratio is more of a modern thing. Mark?

Here's another look at that rare "Cinderella Boys" Pennant. This one is in really nice condition, and about as scarce as a 3 dollar bill...

It came from a 2002 Mastro Auction...

http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...entoryid=21686

I was under-bidder, and am still stinging 12 years later. Until Rob posted above, I had not seen another one since...

Sorry I missed that... the 1919 Reds pennant is just standard full sized.

Scott's magnificent Vandy Pennant is a unique animal. Nothing quite like it, in terms of size or material (which is more of a cloth, than felt). Plus, it was originally attached to a stick in a unique way that really cannot be compared to anything else.

You need to find another Cubs, so you can display them side by side . That is an awesome pennant. Have you seen other double sideds?

One more thing and then I'll let you get back to work....

Mastro mentioned "only surviving example"....this blows my mind. In the grand scheme, 1951 is not that long ago. You would think this pennant was made in at least some kind of quantity...100s? 1000s? Where did they all go? 1951 was a pretty big deal for Giants fans...

I got mine for $85, shipping included, on eBay. Would you have bid, Mark, or do you have higher standards? if I see something Giants I don't have, I go for it...pretty much regardless of condition.

Default Double sided pennants

The only double sided pennant I've ever come across was a great Athletics pennant I saw at show in the Philly area. One side had Philadelphia Athletics, while the other side had Kansas City Athletics. Wish I would have picked it up.

Here is my favorite Eagles pennant: A circa 1933 or 34 yellow and blue variety.

That's a great one Keith!

Rob:
As for double-sided... I have seen quite a few...

* Houston Colt .45s, updated to Astros on the reverse
* Boston Braves, updated to Milwaukee on the reverse
* Boston Braves, updated to 1948 World Seies on the reverse
* Philadelphia A's, updated to Kansas City on the reverse

... and a few others that I'm forgetting.

As for the Cinderella Boys Pennant.... normally I'm a slave to condition, but often make an exception if something is insanely rare (or is likely a "now or never" type of piece). That pennant sure fits the category. For $85, I think you did incredibly well. Had I seen it, I would have gone at least double to 3 times that amount.

But don't use me as an example! To someone who does not suffer from OCD, I would guess it's about a $400 piece in that condition.

I shared this Mantle Day pennant on another thread a few weeks ago as a recent pickup, so I apologize to any of you who may have seen it there.

This one I've often wondered about...Is it a baseball pennant (White Sox)? It has a cloth AG Spalding label sewn onto the back (circa 1910's logo). Has anyone seen one like this in a ballpark photo?

Chicago_Spalding_Pennant photo Chicago_AGSpalding_zpse9e47767.jpg

Lastly, if you will allow it , a Football pennant I recently picked up in an Antiques store. There was another recent thread asking if we ever find any good deals in Antiques stores. Like most of us, I usually don't; but this time I did!

Interestingly enough, Spahn didn't seem to be an important enough factor to make the roster list.

Probably one of my first pieces of memorabilia way before I even started collecting. My father was given tickets to a World Series game in 1983 at Philadelphia. But I was 6 years old and didn't want to miss my rec soccer game(really wish he forced me to go). But at that time we had season tickets to the Cosmos and I was all about soccer. He gave the tickets to friends of his and they brought me back this pennant. Was hanging in my room all through my childhood, now it is proudly displayed in my memorabilia room.

Default Pennants

Beautiful pennants every one.
Jack, I think the Chicago pennant is a University of Chicago pennant.
I had a group of about 10 nearly identical Spalding pennants that were for assorted colleges. They all had the identical tasseled string woven into them, and that attractive wavy cut to the felt.

Default Carlisle

Sorry for the small photos, but here is my Carlisle pennant with Thorpe-esque football carrier pictured.

This one isn't in my collection, but rather part of my for sale inventory; its a rare Stan Musial pennant.

Here is my favorite Eagles pennant: A circa 1933 or 34 yellow and blue variety.

That is an absolutely awesome Eagles pennant. Early football pennants are incredibly rare. I have never seen anything like that. Thanks for posting

The Olympic pennant looks like it was printed yesterday!

The border on the Yankees pennant is crazy!

and your last Yankees pennant has the same "New York" as my Giants pennant......the Giant was retained for an SF pennant. I love seeing the similarities of disparate teams . Do I see a smiley face on the "bat with the hat" or is it my imagination?

Default Negro League Pennant

Anyone have any original Negro League pennants they'd share?

I have always wanted an original Baltimore team pennant from the negro leagues, but have not acquired one yet.

Default Eagles Pennant

Thanks Jason.
Yes, I agree, NFL team pennants from the 1930's and before are very hard to find. I've been hunting for a Frankford Yellowjackets pennant for years.

There are some beautiful pennants in this thread. The only one in my collection that isn't common place would be this 3ft by 8ft early 70's Pirate pennant. Judging by the union sign stamping, heavy canvass material, and the weighted tip I don't believe it was a created for sale. I assume it was hung in or around the ball park

Thank you very much for the information!
And speaking of attractive, your Carlisle Indians pennant has great eye appeal; as do so many others which have been shown here.

Beautiful! Do you know, is there an identical 10" x 29"?

This pennant may have been hung at a team function e.g. end of year banquet. Wherever it hung, it's cool. How did you get it?
