Hey Dan- We have done card business a long time ago. I respect you as a dealer. For all your years of experience, you are going to get people that may know T206 cards, but lack the knowledge in scarce backs. I know the guy very well who ticked you off. He really is a good person & a good collector, but needs to learn about these scarce backs. When I see him at the next card show in my area, I will speak to him about this matter & try to further educate his knowledge in scarce T206 backs.

If the guy didnt know what he was talking about he should have been asking dan to explain his price, not lecturing him. So Dan gets a little ticked off from time to time. Not a big deal.

That is cool, but to be fair, why make a $300 offer on a $7500 listing even if the item is only worth $2.00. You just don't do that my friend. Not cool.

A seller has every right to ask what they want, if it is ridiculous to the buyer, either send an email or move on. making stupid offers just causes problems.

If he is cool than I am more than happy to help him in any way.

thanks
dan

I made an offer of $1.43 on Dan's upside down, miscut, T210 Old Mill. It was a good price for me. He declined.

Seeing this much stress from this simple offer. I think the best thing you can do is take off the best offer option and just put what you want for the card. Not worth losing sleep over my man.

Its ok to get ticked off. It's not ok to take it out on people, especially over the price of a freaking baseball card.

That basically is the definition of a dick...right or wrong?

So what if you get low balled. Thats a day in the life of a sales transaction....

Maybe I will tell everyone I know to go on ebay and low ball him until he gets used to it?

Get a freaking grip on reality or find something else to do with your time.

Are you kidding me?

Then we wouldn't have this awesome thread!

Would you prefer not to have this thread?

If so, then yes, I will put a minimum offer on things to keep the chump changer idiots from embarrassing themselves

maybe you need to add some text in your listings regarding acceptable best offers in relation to asking price....just a thought.....especially when asking uber-retail.

Dan is a good guy and knows his stuff. I wouldn't have handled the situation the way he did, but to each his own.

On a side note, I just returned to the board after an extended break and I am amazed at some of the colorful insults that fly almost daily now. The board has seemed to lose some of its civility, but as it is Leon's property he alone can make that judgement. I'll argue all day long with someone, but I'll attempt to return an educated response. I've seen more more references to masterbation, sexuality, and political preference in the last week then I did in the previous six years. Oh well.

Whenever you accept my $300 dollar offer from today on your Lenox.

Call me in the AM lets set a time already.

I agree with Dan grumpy or not common sense says if a card is listed for $7k you don’t offer a few hundred bucks…it is a little insulting.

Besides if the guy did the research on the t206.org site that brought him to this insane price. He could also have done or did additional research on other sites and past eBay sales and see that Lenox cards don’t sell for 3-4 hundred dollars especially hall of fame players.

Sort of like me using Google to look up T206 Wagner’s and pulling the 80k price from 15 years ago on one and offering that today on the same card. Guy didn’t look up Lenox and find only that one site and historical price I’m not buying it.

Cheers,

John

Dan, I agree the guy was a dumbs..t, but you really didn't need to point that out to him. On the other hand, it's not like you lost a potential sale to a guy who wants to spend $300 for a Lenox.
I want to add that I bought a card from Dan last month. It was a BIN, I made an offer, Dan counter- offered, I accepted, and we both were happy. No problems and no drama. Thanks Dan.

Hey Danny,

Maybe you and Scott went to a ball game together sometime back.

BTW, there is an April 24 1 o'clock day game vs the Cardinals. Might be a good day for you to play hooky and come down here to catch it. It'll probably be cold but the Ketel should take care of that.

Yes Sean I agree with you. I get tons of goofy offers and I usually just decline them and populate my blocked bidder list.

This one was bad timing, I had a horrible day at work and was late getting home. So I blew up. But anyone that knows me, that is me right or wrong sometimes.

Well Andrew is selling a Wagner for $75k, so I think those prices are still relevant.

There are a lot of casual collectors, as opposed to those hopelessly addicted to the monster, who don't have a clue as to scarce backs. There really is no accurate price guide, in book form or online, from which such a buyer could educate himself. Look at T206.org and you'll get a price of a few hundred bucks. Look at the SCD Vintage catalog and the card is worth maybe $100 times a multiplier of 10 to 15x for the back. SMR says its a $75 card in good condition. You really have to know past auction prices to know the value of Dan's card. Most casual collectors will not do that much research.

Tom, true!
But the guy offered Dan 5% of what the card was listed for.
W/ such a disparity, he should have researched the value prior to making the offer.
Does anyone expect any seller to discount a lot at 95% off their asking price?

I'm not sure why people are defending this clown. You wouldn't walk into the National and offer a dealer $300 on $7500 price tag, why is it ok on eBay? I'm also not buying the "stupid collector" theory, if he didn't know about backs (which is impossible at this point) then why is he interested in paying $300 for a $100 front. I personally think he was just being a d!ck.

I'll take Dan over almost anyone in this forum. He's honest and he doesn't suffer fools. And none of his cards are seriously undergraded.

Sure, the item may be only worth 30%, but I assume the seller has a value in mind that's too high for me and I am not going to waste our collective energy.

And I'm not sure why people are defending Dan's behavior. Let's use your example for a minute. Let's say that same buyer walked up to Dan at the National and offered him $300 on his card priced $7500. Do you honestly think Dan would have responded the same? Do you think he would have called a customer at his table an "idiot" and a "dumbshit" and told him to do his homework? Or do you think the situation would have been handled a little different in person? So, I'll ask you the same question. Why is it ok on eBay?

Idk, I haven't met Dan at a show yet so I'll try and see what happens.

I've listed BINs with best offer before, so I've experienced the extreme low-balling phenomena that only seems to exist on eBay. I just let it slide and write it off as annoying... But Dan actually calling one of these guys out publicly was pretty funny to me.

I can pretty much assure you it would go down the same way.

Well heck. I made a ridiculously low offer on one of his auctions in effort to extract an asinine response and I just got blocked.

I guess you guys' posts set him straight!!

Dan,

How about 15 bucks for one of those poor looking cards that have missing color you have for sale? According to various price guides that is what a poor common should sell for. HAHA

I was thinking the same thing. No one would be stupid enough to make such an offer in person, but Dan's reaction would be predictable.

At least you didn't get the guy who wanted me to end my auction early (7 day auction) and pay me $5 shipping included for a $20.00 card. He was politely told that I do not end auctions early especially when I have watchers.

I have the strange thought that if I called numerous members "assholes" and then called Leon a "prick" I would get at least a small vacation .... if not a permanent one.

Must be nice to have clout like that.
