Picked this up off of ebay recently in a postcard lot....the seller (isoldit store) had no idea who it was that was pictured on this postcard.

I read somewhere that Billy Sunday was the first person to speak to over a million people at one time via large crowds and over the radio . Not sure if that is true or not .

Could W.G.McConnell be George McConnell? Played major league ball 1909-16. If so, nice autographed piece.

I don't think so....that's the first thing I thought of though when I looked at the back of the card and saw that. George McConnell's middle name starts with an "N" and he was from Tennessee....nearly all of the cards in the lot were of this McConnell family in Pennsylvania.

Very nice Dan. On top of everything else, I haven't seen that 13 stars flag cancellation on a stamp previously. But I know - who cares?

We're on the same page PC. I found that website the other day when I was trying to find out if Billy Sunday was in New Castle on that date. I also found a site with hundreds of postcards depicting Sunday and could not find a single one depicting him in a baseball uniform.

I assume at the time of the game Sunday was no longer a pro player but participating in an exhibition. I've never seen a 20th century photo of Sunday playing ball.

Sunday was just short of his 48th birthday in Oct 1910 so this was probably just an exhibition he was doing for fun or for publicity. Cool find for sure.
