Default Does this Gehrig look like a doctored reprint

I have been looking for a 1934 Goudey Gehrig for a while now and this one doesnt look right to me. The front gives the appearance of a doctored reprint, but the back seems more legit. It may just be the scan, but do the borders seem really wide even with all that corner rounding? The seller does have a high feedback rating but most of the feedback deals with memorabilia and not cards

The corner wear is "too perfect" for all the wear that is there. And it's really rare that a card with much corner wear doesn't have some other problems. You just don't get that kind of wear on the corners without the gloss of the card being affected and/or picking up a few creases. Also, with the corners as rounded as they are, the corners should be layering quite noticably.

This is a tough call. My first thought would be no, simply because of the sellers reputation. In a close call like this, the best thing to do is ask the seller if they will guarantee authenticity, and offer a refund if the buyer believes it to be a reprint.

Aside from the sellers feedback (which doesn't always guarantee things), if the card was a reprint it's one that was produced in the 1960's. These are nearly impossible to spot, even in a high quality scan like this. The corner wear does look suspect with its even wear, and that is a common trait among the 60's Goudey reprints. The image also appears to be a bit too vivid, but there's an extremely fine line between 60's repro's and real Goudeys.
The defining factor here would be the stock of the card. Although you're not going to be able to look at this, it would definately tell you if the card was real or reprint. The 60's Goudey reprints were produced with a slightly thinner, and darker stock than the original Goudeys.

the card is 100% real. I also know the seller to be very reputable and I'd just confer with him on the card and just let him know of your concern and see if he'll offer a money-back guarantee.

I agree with Tom -- the card is real. The reason the corners have an unusual "rounded" appearance is because some collectors/dealers in the 1980s would lightly trim off some of the "fuzziness" from worn corners to give their cards a cleaner look. It wasn't done in a deceptive manner. The rest of the wear on the card -- scuffing, dirtiness, notching, light creasing -- is otherwise consistent with the corner wear.

Card look authentic. I have owned a few Goudeys with nice round corners like this one, some have creases, some dont. It is the very thick stock that make the corners wear this way. Frank
