Default (E Cards) 1900s Early Candy & Gum Cards, 1960 and 2018.

Here are a few pages from the American Card Catalog, reprinted from the 1960 version (a few times).
U.S. Early Candy and Gum cards seemed to be the rage back in 1960 with a "large adult following who avidly snap up anything available at what would ordinarily seem high prices for this type of card."

Now, in 2018, it seems they have cooled off quite a bit for all except the top tier cards. There was a day, not that many years ago (12-15?), that this type of error E92 Dockman McGraw (below) would have brought good money relatively speaking. It was added to the collection last week for a fraction of what it would have been back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, from our BST section and from one of the other mods, no less. Will they ever go back up in value, who knows? Currently they are neat to collect and won't break the bank. This McGraw looks to be missing a red pass and was $125 delivered. It's hard to beat that kind of value in pre-war, to me.

It’s interesting to see what vintage cards have been in fashion at various times. By the 1970s, when the hobby really started growing in popularity, the hot things were 1930s gum cards (Goudeys, etc.) and 1950s regionals, which were much more expensive in relative terms than they had been in Burdick’s generation (or than they are today). In the 1980s, of course, postwar cards, epitomized by the 1952 Topps Mantle, were the hot cards to have, whereas in the 1970s and earlier they had barely been worth mentioning, and hadn’t been considered “vintage” at all.

I have grown to really enjoy E cards. They have the same back-advertisement diversity as T cards. They have the same subjects and many great poses, and they are a relative bargain. Plus, if you like Wagner or Jackson, they really are the only game in town. I hope E cards come back, but not until 2020, after I have bought all the E cards I want....

I like how he included the E43 Circus Caramels in the picture. I love that set.

Add t206 to this. When I collected them in the mid-80s, they weren't anywhere as popular as they are now. The last couple years, t205 seems to be taking off. However, back then t3s were the most desirable tobacco set. Now they are less popular, as are t201, t202 and t207. Weren't E cards a lot more popular ~10 years ago and have declined in popularity? There seems to be an ebb and flow in collecting habits of vintage card collectors.

E cards were definitely more popular 10 years ago, especially E93, E94 and E98. Personally I'm very happy they are down right now as I can pick them up at decent prices. I'm hoping they don't go back up for years.

Leon, great pick up and an absolute bargain of a price. I also am glad the E cards have cooled off and hope they continue to remain for at least a couple more years. As you know, I'm a bit obsessed with them, particularly the different variations in the E92 set. I'm actually quite surprised the oddities and rarer caramels haven't become more popular.

And cause we can never have enough pictures, here are two print error you don't see everyday.
