Default A little off topic, but it's July 4th........

Posted By: Brian Weisner

It seems ironic that 2 of our founding fathers died on our nations birthday on the same day in 1826. These 2 men weren't even friendly most of there lives, and disagreed completely on several issues, but on there death beds, both expressed gratitude that the other was still alive to carry on the fight for freedom and Liberty. Let's honor the memories of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, and all of those who have served this great Nation.

And to the fine men and women who have served the cause for freedom so well for the past 230 years. I spent a few hours in airports last week and was fortunate enough to speak to a few dozen of our troops moving in and out of deployment. I can't tell you how impressed I was with the genuine passion and commitment that these fine Americans have as the continue to safeguard our freedom and Liberty.

Jefferson and Adams would be very proud that there legacy live on.

Sorry for going off topic, but the 4th is truly a special day, that all Americans can agree on.

Enjoy the cookout and fireworks tonight and remember those who made it possible.

Happy 4th to all Brian

And to think that Adams rode horseback from Boston to Philly several times a year along the old Post Roads risking capture, bandits, savages, weather etc etc. My butt gets sore and patience worn just riding in traffic from Plymouth to Boston, sitting on a plush bucket seat with AC on high. A determined patriot as was his cousin and brewmeister Sam. Thankyou Mr President.

A good way to keep stuff on topic while going way off topic is linking old players to the date/event and putting some scans in. Three old judge players were born on July 4th including HOF'er Mickey Welch and also Charles Bastian and Chris Fulmer. Two t206 players also share the countries birthday,George Mullin and Jack Warhop. Bill Kenworthy might have a card(anyone know?),he was a .310 hitter in the federal league over 2 years and led the league in extra base hits one year

on PBS. Detailing John Adams, Independence, and his relationship with Thomas Jefferson.

It was a great show. I am sure it gets repeated often, so catch it if you haven't already.

I should have paid attention more in school... very interesting stuff!

Adams was very jealous of Jefferson - felt he got too much credit for the revolution, and Adams himself not enough. He had a legitimate beef. Only in recent years, largely because of David McCulloch's excellent biography, has Adams started to get his due. He was also very competitive, and wanted to outlive Jefferson to achieve the final victory. His last words were a frustrated, "Jefferson still lives". Jefferson had actually died a few hours earlier, but the news didn't reach Adams before he died hunself. Thus, even though he won the final victory, he never knew it.

I always understood that Adams' last words, "Jefferson still lives", were said out of relief as opposed to frustration.

The Adams' family houses (including John's and John Quincy's birth houses) are part of a national historic site in Quicny, MA, which is just south of Boston off Rt. 3 on the way to (or from) the Cape. Just add a game at Fenway, and a visit a little further south on Rt. 3 to Plymouth (to see the Rock), and you've got a great weekend for the whole family.
