Default Variation T205 Latham Honest Long Cut back

Been a while since this was discussed so I wanted to see if there was any more people that have any examples or info.

Several years back I noticed that the T205 A. Latham with a Honest Long Cut back actually has a period before the A and on one example shows a faint W. Also a crazy occurrence with this particular card is the front of the cards are overprinted on the bio from the back. I have found no other examples other than those with HLC backs.

So as rarity would have it

Period Before A. Latham
W.A. Latham
A. Latham

As far as pricing goes it should command a higher premium than the WA variation but who knows if that will happen.

Sort of reviving this old thread and I WOULD like to add a .A. Latham HLC card to my set still if anyone has one that they would like to de-accession, but that is NOT the point of my post.

I'm wondering of my T205 brothers & sisters - does the W. A. Latham card exist with any other back besides the red Sweet Cap??? It seems that all of the ones that I see have this same back.

This enquiring mind would like to know...

Thanks in advance!

That's what I thought until I found this... It's light, but it's DEFINITELY a "W" !!

I have a HLC back with no period before the A as well as one with a faint period. I have also seen Polar Bear backs with and without the faint "W". There is a nice copy on Ebay right now in NM with the faint "W" for big bucks!

Hello to the Net 54 Family! I hope everyone had a great Holiday season with your families. I have been away for a while but decided to see whats new. Boy am I glad I did.

So now the question is "In what way do we label the newest addition to the T205 list"?

There is enough evidence with the few copies available to show a 4th variation is proper as W A. Latham.
  1. A. Latham
  2. W. A. Latham
  3. Period before .A. Latham
  4. W No Period before A. Latham

Although this is a misprint variant it helps me think that the W.A. Latham was to be printed with all the backs listed in the A. Latham. The W. A.Latham was run in the SC 42 factory with no issues. The type set printing was then moved to a different press or shipped away to another factory. PB then gets it and prints a few sheets with the period missing and the W at slight angle. The press was probably not set to the same specs and thus created a much lighter pass. The W probably just got slid up in the block and out of the way. From there HLC looks as though they tried to fix it and thus the W is inverted and looks like a M in the Period before A variations. From there it was removed permanently and run the press all the way through to Drum. The backs possible for A.Latham do not include a Pied 42 and thus I would say will also no include any Hassan 30 or 649 backs.

This also would suggest a pattern that sheets were printed possibly. I would love to hear any feed back.

I wonder if some T205 variations represent someone trying to file away a problem without resetting the type. If the Sweet Cap 42 red “W. A. Latham” came first and someone decided to file away the “W.” for future printings, maybe we might see something like this as an Honest print run and a Polar Bear print run follow with various degrees of incomplete filing.

I don’t know enough about how the type was set to guess how easy it would have been to reset the type versus try to file away the bit you don’t like.

I also wonder if the Latham PB with the “W” is comparable in rarity with the Moran PB stray line, which might indicate that they shared a print run.

I do NOT have an HLC back to compare closely... But rather than an inverted "W" appearing as an "M" on the HLC back, MIGHT we be seeing the central diagonal bar of the "W" on the the HLC back??? (It seems to line up well with the "n" in When directly below it.)

Take a look at the PB back that I marked up... I think that represents what I am talking about for the HLC reverse, in case my description isn't clear...

Post #2 has an example. For sure an inverted W. See below.

Also has anyone noticed the Latham Bio printed under the front on any Latham other than HLC backs?
