He was then asked to bid again, as I read it, to take the top slot.

Then why does Brent write to him twice that he assured he would be outbid? How does Brent know he will be outbid unless Brent knows how high other bidders are willing to go on the card? That makes no sense to me.

Brent may not actually 'know'. He may of said that just to get him to make that bid and if he won, it would understood he didnt have to pay for it since he was told to bid and that he would not win the card.

I wonder what transpired right after the hammer price.
