Default FS: Toughest Post-1940 Autograph Extant - Clancy Smyres - Full JSA LOA

https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...han-babe-ruth/

2013 article written by the esteemed Jim Stinson regarding the rarity and value of a Clancy Smyres autograph. Anyone who has thought of looking for one knows that they simply do not exist. Back in the 1980's, people were lining up for the one example that Jim had...he sold it for $450 when Ty Cobb checks were going for 1/3 that amount. And he had people calling him to ask the contact info of the person who bought it so that they could offer that person even more $$.

The number of examples of his autograph have not increased since.

This example hails from the collection of Ray Nemec. It was signed by Smyres in 1941, three years before he made it to the majors for his cup of coffee in 1944. Not only did he sign this Heilbroner information card, he filled out much of the information in his own hand as well.

If you are looking to complete a decade run of the 1940's...if you are looking to complete a Brooklyn Dodgers run...you will never have another chance to obtain this autograph. I can guarantee it.

I may be willing to trade but a cash offer will override a potential trade.

Asking $3,000 delivered.

Tom C

Wow! That's a rare one! Good luck with the sale, I'm sure it'll go fast.

I've been working on a bio of Smyres for my blog "The Infinite Baseball Card Set". Besides refusing to sign autographs and unwilling to even discuss his baseball career, I have searched for 10 years for a photo of him to use as reference for an illustration - also with no results. Only think I've found is a circa 1980's team picture of softball team he was a coach of.

I found a large, very clear team photo of the 1943 New Orleans Pelicans of which he was a starting member. I was all excited at finally getting a likeness of Smyres - only to find that in the small print below the photo the note "missing: C. Smyres"!!!
