Here are the original mini pennants. I have seen the Ebbets large pennants for at least 5 or so different teams from this set.

So is this a fantasy piece too? I saw it in person and it certainly appeared to have some age to it.

No, that is a different design compared to the Brewers BF3.

So you don't think it was a Red Ball? It certainly appears similar.

It is an absolute certainty that your pennant wasn't issued from Red Ball.

1. The didn't issue large pennants of minor league teams.
2. They only issued one mini pennant for the Brewers. You can see it in the previous pic I posted.

There is more info on the BF3 premiums earlier in this thread: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...97#post1831997

Red Ball issued large pennants as premiums, but only of the 16 MLB teams in the styles show in the salesman sample book. The large pennants are pretty much identical to their mini pennant counterparts.

At least your Brewers Pennant is authentic and of the era, as opposed to the other example.

Yours has proper aging, a correct spine and painted/screened graphics (as opposed to the tell-tale raised velvet).

Neat rare pennant!

I have no opinion on the authenticity of this pennant. But, I did want to address your question about the felt letters/graphics and the way some manufacturers affixed these to the body of the pennant. You are correct that most manufacturers would sew the letters on. This was commonplace through the 1920s and 30s until screened/painted designs became the norm.

BUT, there was at least one manufacturer that glued the letters to the body. If you're able to examine one of these pennants in person, it'll be fairly obvious that the letters are felt; but, on the reverse, there'll be no stitching outlining the spot where each letter sits.

I suspect this was done to lower production costs. Running a sewing machine takes time and and an experienced operator. Glue ... not so much.

I don't think this production method ever really caught on. For one, glue tends to crack when a pennant is waved back and forth. It also breaks down with time. It had to be cheaper to just screen print the lettering and be done with it.

Time to defibrillate this thread...CLEAR!!!!

This baby just sold on Ebay while listed as an International League minor league baseball pennant...However, I feel that's wrong. This pennant is made of 1960s material (the baseball Bears disappeared around 1949) which would make it a Newark Bears Continental Football League pennant. The spine and tassels also scream 1960s. Curious what others thought.

Don’t know, Rob, but it’s a great pennant. What did it go for?

I would lean towards football as well. I have seen a few late 1940s Pennants with this cloth material and sporting these "flimsy" type of tassels. That Brooklyn Dodgers Football Pennant with the Bum would be one example.

But this cloth material and construction was far more prevalent from the late 1950s to mid 1960s. It could conceivably be either Baseball or Football, but I'd lean pretty heavily towards Football. The Bear logo looks more "football-ish" as well.

I don't know the color scheme for either team off the top of my head. But would guess this pennant was once light-to-medium blue, and has since faded to grey. Perhaps it would help to research the colors for the two teams, if anyone here wants to invest the time. That could help narrow it down as well.

Thanks, guys. It only had to travel about 3 hours down I45. They shipped it in what I would call a "brick" of cardboard, about 4 flat sheets on top and 4 on the bottom. It might have stopped a bullet. I'll take it over the pennant oragami that I've been receiving lately.

Here are a few others I've picked up over the past few months. The Giants pennant is an upgrade. The Houston All Star Game pennant has been elusive. And the random yellow circa 1983 unlicensed 49ers pennant may be the most difficult to find.

Those are all tougher than one would think. Nice pick ups. I have the Yankees version of that Giants pennant where they added another piece of fabric on the pennant saying “Giant Killers”. Odd pennant.

I'd like to see the 1962 Yankees pennant as well.

It makes me think of this 49ers pennant that someone tried to "update" for the 49ers next Super Bowl.

I only collect pennants directly related to the 1971 Pirates. There were 8 versions of such pennants that I was aware of until today when I discovered this photo of Steve Blass on EBay. It appears that there was a 1971 World Series Championship pennant made for Steve Blass day in Canaan CT. The last census indicates there are less than 4000 residents in Canaan. Due to this I can't believe many of these were produced. Has anybody here ever seen one of these in person?

As requested. You can see it is a separate piece of fabric, but it appears that is was applied prior to sale as it looks the part. I have never seen one like it, but one could pop tomorrow. That Giants one is a tough version as well. Ironic that they are playing right now. I won't tell you who I'm rooting for.

BTW, I've never seen that Steve Blass pennant either.

Do you suppose it had originally read, "American League Champions"? And then they updated their unsold stock after the series ended? Definitely looks like the original manufacturer made this modification.

I guess they had to fill some space; hence the "Giant Killers" addition.

I would guess that. It is very secure so I can’t peel any of it away to peek. Honestly, I can’t remember seeing a regular Yankees version either. I assume it was originally sold in San Fran and they made very few Yankees versions compared to Giants and sold even less. Probably took unsold stock and tried to make the best situation they could with the remainder. When I bought it, the seller also had the Giants version. I want to say they had some other Giants version that was similar to the Giants version posted, but slightly different. Hard to remember.

I have seen the Yankees regular version (1962 AL Champs). It was in an early Mastro & Steinbach Auction, but of course we can no longer access those archives.

Here’s a related 1962 WS pennant with the same Batter graphic.

Rob,
Do you have different Giants versions of that style pennant? I can’t remember, but I am pretty sure there are a couple of slightly different designs. Or, have you seen either of those Yankees ones that Mark or I described?

I have the same purple "souvenir" pennant as Mark. I've also seen it in red.

I have the orange 1962 as well as this one with reversed colors. My buddy has a brown version which he swears is not faded black.

Can’t let this thread die! Here’s a pic of one of my favorite Mets pennants, clearly a NL Champs pennant that was revised after the series.

Nice Mets pennant, Greg.

I don't have anything new to share, so I'll post something obscure. A pennant for the 1977/1978 San Jose Tigers (football), who were California League Champions in 1977. They lost to the Shreveport Steamer (yes, that is apparently singular) in the 1978 American Football Association Championship.

I've never seen another and have wondered if this might be the only survivor. I don't think that the league was very popular. I like seeing obscure/rare minor league pennants (any sport), and would enjoy seeing any that board members may have.

I have always wondered if any pennants exist from WWII era Pacific Coast Football League (San Francisco Bay Packers, San Franciso Clippers, Oakland Giants, San Jose Mustangs, Los Angeles Bulldogs, San Diego Bombers)

Great pennant Marc. Semi-pro football pennants are so hard to come by. We had a 1960s Brooklyn Dodgers pennant rear it's head on this thread about a year ago. Here are a few others I've seen...

O love all of those!

The color in the Rams screams a certain maker but I can’t remember which one.

It's by WGN. Identical to their Los Angeles Rams pennant; same artwork.

Were the Petaluma Leghorns part of this league? Pretty legendary round these parts.... seems I recall a pennant, probably local made

I don't think that it was the same league, but there were other semi-pro leagues around in CA evern earlier (1930s), with teams like the Salinas Packers.

Default Mini Pennant information

Hi everyone

I found this set in a box - don't remember when I picked it up?

I remember some attributing the pennants to Tom's peanuts?

They're about 6" and there's a set of 16.

Interesting which locations they picked - I'm doubting they're "period?" If a promo from Tom's e.g. These could be from the 70s or something?

The Cincy pennants refers to the Redlegs.
