I was thinking that it would be really cool to watch some vidoes of players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson etc. Does anyone have anything like this or know where to buy.

Try the "Glory Of Their Times" VHS or Ken Burns Baseball

I'd highly reccommend Ken Burns Baseball. It's expensive (about $100), but I think it's worth it. It's ten discs and over 23 hours long. The first five discs are very informative and cover pre-war baseball.

The First Inning - Our Game - 1840s thru 1900
The Second Inning - Something Like a War - 1990 thru 1910
The Third Inning - The Faith of Fifty Million People - 1910 thru 1920
The Fourth Inning - A National Heirloom - 1920 thru 1930
The Fifth Inning - Shadow Ball - 1930 thru 1940
The Sixth Inning - The National Pastime - 1940 thru 1950
The Seventh Inning - The Capital of Baseball - 1950 thru 1960
The Eight Inning - A Whole New Ballgame - 1960 thru 1970
The Ninth Inning - Home - 1970 thru 1994
Extra Inning

I have only watched the first four or five, but I agree with Ray that the Ken Burns documentary is great.

The video version of The Glory of Their Times that was on PBS years ago, that is a fantastic work. I wish they'd release it on DVD.

Not to hijack this thread but I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame site. Great place. I have just one question. Who are the 4 morons that didn't vote for Cobb to be in the Hall of Fame? 222 out of 226 votes. Matty 205? Ruth 215? And Johnson 189? 189 of 226. What did these guys have to do? Leap tall buildings in a single bound? Some voters really were clueless when it came to greatness.

In Rememberance of James W. Brennan Sr. 1924-1982. Dad, thanks for everything you did for me.

Youtube is a beautiful thing. I agree with everyone here who has also recommended Ken Burns Baseball - it's the best and if you haven't seen it before here is a short clip from Inning 1

How about Ruth's called shot? Also on youtube.

How about the Babe in the bright lights?

Ty Cobb doing a lot of smiling...

You could literally spend all day looking at youtube...unfortunately I can't find any clips from The Glory Of Their Time on there.

Hi,

I own the Ken Burns 10-DVD set and it has some wonderful things going for it. It is informative, but if you are looking for actual "moving picture" videos, most of the early years only show pictures and the narrator talks about the action. You don't actually see a film of Matty or Wagner or Cobb so much as you see a still picture and a narration.

Later on in the series, Burns has the actual "moving picTure" video.

Sincerely,

Cy
