Default T206 Cy Young Portrait

Posted By: Dave Snyder

I have the opportunity to purchase (through a friend) a T206 Cy Young portrait graded PSA 4 for what I consider a reasonable price (a little more than $1000). The card is beautiful - great registration, perfect green color with clean borders and clean back. That being said, it's still a lot of money but it seems to me that outside of Cobb's green portrait (and of course the big 4), that the Cy Young portrait is the most desireable card to own - maybe slightly ahead of the Mathewson and Johnson portraits? Seems that their prices have been going through the roof lately.

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

-Dave

Dave,
A grand seems about right to me, I sold a PSA 4 for a bit over a thousand last August.

While I like the young portrait...quite a bit...I'd rather have the johnson portrait personally.

Matty and Johnson were, in my opinion, by far the better pitchers of their era. While the prices of Young cards shows that I may be alone in this regard, I never felt nearly as much a pull toward Young as I have toward Matty and Johnson. Still, the price you have is a solid price.

I second what everybody said- $1000 for a PSA 4 is fair, especially if it is well centered. But I would put it third behind the Matty and Johnson portraits.

If it was me, I would feel comfortable paying, 900-1200 range for the Cy Young depending on the eye appeal. But also agree that the Johnson and Matthewson would be on my list before the Young.

Not to disparage the Young portrait, but in a comical past thread about t206 lookalikes, someone posted a picture of a frog with puffed-out cheeks that dead ringer for Cy.

...........to all who've responded so far - you've been very helpful.

I have a Matty portrait (granted it's a PSA 1) and a Johnson hands at chest (a very nice PSA 2), so I targeted Cy as the next HOF'er to get.

I was thinking my price was a very good deal, but it seems to be "about right" according to everyone. I was bidding on a PSA 3 on Ebay a few weeks back and in the last 2 minutes it shot from the mid $600's to the mid $900's - I couldn't believe it. I'm about 150 cards deep into my T206 set - 75% of which I've purchased on Ebay and hadn't seen that type of escalation. I obvioulsy understand there's a premium on certain cards (this being one of them), but that blew me away.

I'll let you know what I decide and if purchased, will certainly include a post.

Thanks again to all.

-Dave

Try to keep in mind that grading is subjective, an ounce of gold is an ounce of gold, but a psa3 ISNT a psa3. There's such a discrepancy in grading, a nice 3 may sell for what a 4 does while a poor 4 will sell for what a 3 does.

I agree with the other posters. A high end PSA 4 would fetch that price, and it would be "reasonable."
I have been watching the T206 Young, Johnson, and Mathewson portraits, and it's quite remarkable how those
cards in particular have shot up really in the past year. It's like they have been "discovered." What gives?

Also, I would say the same is true of the E90-1 Young. I seem to recall that there was one in Barry's auction or sale page not too long ago (couple of years maybe) that would now be considered a steal. Does anyone remember that one--Barry (could be I'm dreaming)?

Brian

seems like an ok deal.
Young, though super, has to line up behind the angelic Johnson portrait
and the gentlemanly Mathewson portrait.

best,

barry

Angelic Johnson and gentlemanly Matty. Elegantly stated, and I couldn't agree more

Many times fame equal value. I will not disagree the Matty and Johnson Portraits are great cards, as they most certainly are. That being said , with respect to value, there is only one Cy Young award.....hence the value of his cards are usually at a premium....regards

i too would rather have a matty or johnson portrait, i used to own a young portrait, and was never really in love with it, plus many view his T206 cards as his "retirement" cards, whereas matty was still in his early years and johnson as well.

BUT, with all of that said, $1000 for a PSA 4 young port, sounds good to me.

best of luck!

I bought both of my Portraits for well under $1000, but they were ungraded at the time. After grading one came back a 5, and the other a 2. I think that sounds like a reasonable price for a portrait that has been graded......if you trust PSA that is...LOL
