I am trying to categorize 34 of these cards. I have checked a number of sites and believe that they are mostly 1936 R314 put out by Goudey. They have "Litho In U.S.A." at the bottom and all have a white border.

I'm also pretty sure that some with a finer signature and no "litho" are 1936 R313's put out by National Chicle Co.

However, I have a few that appear to be more yellow, age?, or the creamy colored stock as described by Century Old Cards, from 1937, R314C? The signatures on these cards also appear to be a little larger than the R313's but not as full as the regular R314's.

Am I on the right track?

Any help from the experts is appreciated.

Thanks, rc

PS - Here is my first try at posting pictures. Dizzy and Paul Dean are two I wondered if they might be R314C.

Hi--

A few months ago, in Issues 6-7 of Old Cardboard, I published a two-part article about these sets that will answer all the questions you've asked. I expect these issues are still available. (If you are into prewar cards at all, I urge you to subscribe to Old Cardboard!)

Richard is right: the Dean cards you posted are from "R313A", the 1934 Wheaties/Gold Medal Foods set.

Cheers,
Tim Newcomb

The ghost of Rube variation. Something must have gone wrong during the printing process and it never made it to the scrap bin .

Thanks Tim. I'm hooked, the publication looks outstanding and should be helpful. I ordered the previous issues 6 & 7 and took a year subscription.

I recently got back into the cards because I acquired a nice group of '33 Goudeys along with the Wide Pen assortment. I started at the Beckett board and posters pointed me in this direction with some of my questions. Looks like a good place to be.

I also never thought I would ever own a tobacco card but as I have said on the other board, "The bug is biting big!"

Thanks again, RC

Glad to have you aboard! This board is the top source of information (and occasional cranky but amusing BS) in the hobby, IMHO.

Check out the articles, and if you have any other questions about the Pen sets, let me know-- they have been one of my collecting loves for many years now--

Best,
Tim

My biggest concern right now, and I have found a couple helpful articles and postings, is how to ID bogus cards. I really want to expand my '33 Goudey set and I'm also new to Ebay.
I did get 3 inexpensive cards the other night and will check them out when I receive them. I went with a "power seller" with great feedback. I know that's no guarantee but thought that was a good place to start.

If you have any advice on reputable sellers of cards, especially the '33 Goudeys I would appreciate it.

Thanks again, RC

PS - I have been known to need deep boots around the "BS" as well.
