Default Question: Lou Gehrig Cards

Is there a story behind why there are so few Lou Gehrig cards issued after 1934? Other than exhibits or premiums they seem to all but stop. He's not in Diamond Stars, Play Ball, Batter Up, 1935 Goudey etc. Does anyone know why this is?

Default a few thoughts

His last full season was 1938. There really weren't a ton of sets issued in the years between 1935 and 1938. He was issued in:

1935...Schutter Johnson..R332
1935... Wheaties.. series 1
1936... Exhibits.. 4 on 1
1936...Goudey.. V355 WWG
1937 ...Exhibits.. 4 on 1
1938 ...Exhibits.. 4 on 1
1939...Exhibits Salutation

So, he was on some issues (and you mentioned Exhibits), just not all of them. You would think he would have been on the others of the day too.

Default Thanks for the list Leon

That's a pretty small list for the premier player of the day! I was sort of wondering if he took some kind of stand against gum cards or wanted more money or???? I mean he was on almost every card in the 1934 Goudey set then, poof, practically gone from any major card issue. Seems kinda weird.

Well Lou objected to smoking and didn't want kids thinking that it was ok because his picture was on a card...oh, wait, I think I have the mixed up.

I don't have info to add - but I did want to post my favorite Gehrig card.

(it is not my favorite because I have one - rather I have one because it is my favorite)
