I believe that is one of the 1890 Stevens cabinets issued of players from the Chicago Players League team. They are catalogued in the Standard Catalog. The one pictured there also has the name written in calligraphy at the top. I always assumed this was not part of the original design, but now that two have the same style of writing, I'd be interested to know whether perhaps the writing is part of the design.

That is ink added after the fact suggesting that a large group of these cabinets originated from the same owner.

I owned the Duffy from this set, Bob Lemke used my photograph for the Standard Catalog. Mine was trimmed the same way at the bottom as this Ryan and had the same vintage ink markings on the front. These are pretty rare but the jury is still out on whether the photographer wrote the name on the front, or the name was written by a single collector as has been suggested. Until more surface it will be hard to tell.

Am I seeing things or is this the "update" version of the card? It looks like "Right Field" has been changed to "Center Field."

who sold me the card before he started having auctions included a xerox of his stats, which are quite impressive. Over 300 lifetime B.A.

I don't know who added the name and position over his head, but it certainly was after the photo was taken; it's clearly marked with ink, though not unattractive.
