Default Some Recent 19th Century Football Photo pickups

Posted By: Keith

Just wanted to share some of the photos I picked up recently. I love these old football photos but am running out of room

1. 1894 Nebraska U. Football player Otis Whipple

2. 1893 University of Penn football player

3. 1898 Purdue University End Rushers photo (thanks to board member Tom for this one) With the help of Purdues sports information department, I identified the players as J.W. Raub and W. Galloway, the starting ends for the 1898 team.

4. 1892 Lake Forest College football team photo - I am guessing by the looks of them that this team wasn't the toughest out there.

5. 1898 Milton Academy football team photo. This is a very large photo with teh board measuring about 20.5 inches by 16.5 inches. Is there a name for a photo this size? Imperial cabinet?

thanks guys
Keith

I do not think the 1892 Lake Forest College football team won too many games. They do not look very mean at all, Red Grange would eat them up by himself - Great photos

Any colleges from New England?

How do you know the last photo is Milton Academy - Massachusetts?

Thanks for the comments guys.

I picked up the Nebraska photo on ebay, but it wasn't identified well at all. I found an 1894 team photo online and id'd Whipple from that.

Although its hard to tell in the digital photo I posted (and the photo is too big to scan on my scanner), the ball is marked with a MAA and 98, with MAA standing for either Milton Academy Athletics or Milton Athletic Association. The photo has a Boston area photographers mark.

The closest I have to a New England college photo is a circa 1895 Colgate team photo, although I do have 7 different Saint Marks School (of Southborough Mass) photographs from 1906 and 1907.

Otis Whipple played Tackle and End for the Huskers in 1893 and 1894...he apparently was a great player, but didn't really see football as all that big of a deal as he was quoted as saying "Whether or not a man plays football in college is mere incident in his life."

Great photo and great pickup...I know lots of Husker fans who would love to have that photo in their collection.
