Default New Pickup - 1883 State University of Iowa Baseball team photo

Posted By: Keith

Hey Guys,

Just picked up this photo and wanted to share it. It is a pretty neat looking cabinet photo of the 1883 State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa Hawkeyes) baseball team. The players are ID'd on back, as well as scores of games with Iowa College and Connell or Cornel, as well as signed by one of the players on the bottom of the back. Too bad this photo wasn't about 10 years older when I believe Cap Anson played at SUI.

Keith, great pick up. Photos of this vintage from the midwest are extremely tough. That size of mount is unusual as well.

You might send a scan to the U of Iowa baseball or athletic department site. They might post it on the site or include in a school publication and give you photo credit. College newsletters and magazines enjoy using historical pics and the publication might raise the sale value.

Thanks guys. I thought the size was unusual as well. It is 13 inches by 7 3/4 inches. I will contact the University shortly as well.

Another quick question for you guys. Even though I love the look of this photograph, it still is baseball and my true collecting focus is on 19th century football. I will probably move this photo at some point. If I opt to move it, where do you think I would be best served? B/S/T , ebay , REA , Hunts? Any idea of value of an item like this if I get in the right auction?

thanks again
Keith

It's oversized and a Big Ten school, plus you say it's been noted and signed by one of the players. I don't think Mastro or Hunt's would take it, but you could ask. By the photo alone I would say they wouldn't, but that it's a memento of one of the players might change their mind. I've never seen an 1800s U of Iowa baseball photo before, and in general 1800s team photos of major school baseball teams are scarce. That yours was owned and signed by a player only makes it rarer and adds value. In an another thread about the Andover photo, I mentioned that an oversized team photo was often given to a player-- and this is an example of an oversized team photo that belonged to a player.

Also, your photo is literally called a "panel card" or panel card photograph-- a mounted photo of that size (13x7).

Thanks alot David, I had never heard of the term panel card. Thats why this forum is so great.
As to the player signing it, you can sort of make it out at the bottom of the back side of the photo, there is written in pencil: "Compliments of J.L Teiters '86 (Teiters is one of the players in the photo"
thanks again
Keith

Clint, I knew I'd seen that photo recently...It shows up in my "Nebraska baseball" search as one of the players is from Kearney, NE. This guy has listed this photo before.

I kept thinking the same thing. I just couldn't place where I'd seen it.

This was the same seller who sold me the original. When I bought the original he asked me if I wanted that photo as well in addition to a bunch of football photos, but all of the other photos were reproductions.
