Default Sheet Music ? Library of Congress ??

Posted By: Shawn

I posted this in the pick up thread, but was wondering if anyone could help me with info on this. Sheet music is certainly not my normal realm of collecting, so I am not up to speed on such things. I have tried to find this particular one, but have found nothing. Does anyone here collect sheet music? Can anyone inform me of any sites that have info. Do you think its authentic? Sales or value?

Thanks in advance!

Steve,

I really like that one! What is the date on it? Let me ask... Is there a point at which age overrides content with baseball sheet music (as far as value goes)? I have noticed that the older the sheet music, the more simple in content it becomes. Thats just what I have seen, may be wrong on that.

Shawn:

I'm no expert but what most collectors are looking for is attractive baseball content graphics. Age certainly does weigh into it. 1885 is a pretty early piece and is still of the era where they used the term Base Ball rather than Baseball.

My piece is 1907. A like specimen sold at auction this year for around $500. My guess on your piece is around $100. But that's just a guess.

Here's another nice one I have:

The cover graphics are pretty much all a piece of sheet music has going for it. Without a dazzling illustration, it generally isn't too valuable.

It may be true that early ones tend to be plainer, but some 1860s-70s baseball music sheets have pictures on the front.

Sports music sheets would be a good area to collect. There's a wide variety-- 1869 Reds to Babe Ruth to Red Grange--, its relatively scarce and inexpensive. Due to the larger size of paper, it's less likely to be faked-- and I'm not aware of fakes anyway.

Even if you don't specialize, keep your eyes pealed for the music. I've seen baseball collections offered by the big auction houses.

I'm a bit surprised I've never come across another copy of this, given the popularity of Feller. I wonder whether the "Sole selling agents" notation at the bottom means one could buy this sheet music only at Grossman Music, leading to its apparent scarcity? Or it could be just a coincidence that I've not seen another one. (The sheet music obviously is a bit too big for my scanner.)

Our collection of ultra high condition baseball sheet music
includes more than 30 pieces. All of the examples in our collection
are either player- endorsed or team endorsed.

Our Joltin Joe Dimaggio and Sey Hey Willie Mays pieces were both signed
(in person) by these legendary HOF's.

We have the largest privately held collection of Federal League Sheet
Music including two pieces where the only known other copies are
in the Hall of Fame.

A number of our pieces were recently on display at the Museum of
City of New York's award winning exhibit The Glory Days of Baseball.

Should you wish to learn more about rare baseball sheet music,
we suggested you visit the Smithonsian web site on baseball
sheet music. Also, mcFarland and Co. published a book
on baseball sheet music back in the 1980's

Please do not hesitate to write in private should you have any
further questions.

Bruces,

Congrats on being better than the rest of us. How about sharing and showing us a scan or two?

o.k. I already know the answer to this, nevermind.

I did find a copy of the "Base Ball Waltz" here on the Library of Congress web site. If you notice though, it is not exactly the same as mine...
Does this mean anything???

Shawn- there are four full color baseball sheet musics from the 1860's that are among the finest color prints of the 19th century game. They are:

1860 Live Oak Polka
1861 Home Run Quickstep
1862? Baseball Quadrille
1867 Baseball..?? (I forgot the title, and I'm away from my reference materials, it was published by Goodman).

These are the only four issued in full color lithography. I have the first two in my own collection, and one of the regular posters on the board has all four.

Maybe someone could post scans of one or more of them, as I am unable. Thank you.

Baseball Sheet Music, whilst not a particularly valuable category of
baseball memorabilia, does, we believe, provide an important
understanding of changes in the history of America's National game.

For those true aficionados we suggest that you visit the Library of Congress
collection. At the link below, you will find illustrations and background
information on more than 140 early pieces of baseball sheet music.

Those who want to hear a selection of said pieces performed may
also want to visit The Baseball Music Project ( a link that can be found
below, as well)

We are most interested in acquiring any ultra rare team or player endorsed
pieces and can be reached at the e-mail address below

And might I add, what a great night it was last night to be a Sox fan

In the old days, publishers registered book and music sheet copyrights with the Library of Congress, and sent the LOC copies of the publications. No doubt, the LOC has quite an accumulation of interesting books, sheet music, etc.

In the old days an inventor had to provide a working model of his invention to the patent office. Make you wonder what the patent office might have in storage.
