Default Shout out to a Net54 member

I'd like to take a minute to publicly thank doug.goodman for his kindness and generosity.

I don't know Doug, but sent him an "out of the blue" message, and asked if he'd be willing to donate this item to a worthy charitable cause:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ht=ernie+banks

Here's the event/cause:

http://www.fredhutch.org/en/events/hutch-award.html

I explained to Doug that I'm in charge of the silent auction portion of the event, and have been for 15 years or so. I'm responsible for procuring all of the auction material, much of which I buy or have donated throughout the year, or which comes from my collection. I also explained that I could purchase it from him if he'd be willing to discount it as much as he could, or better yet...he could donate it.

Not knowing me from Adam, not only did Doug outright donate the item, but he also paid the substantial shipping cost himself.

His affirmative generosity will contribute nicely to the funds raised for the very important work they do at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Here's a link to a 2012 story we did on Fred Hutchinson and the Hutch Award:

http://sportspressnw.com/2126136/201...n-and-an-award

Doug is quite deserving of his last name. Good man! Thanks Doug!!

...and here's an 11 year old Fred Hutchinson, bottom row far left, on his grade school baseball team here in Seattle:

Nice gesture by all involved......cool seeing a photo like that of a kid that age that you can pinpoint. Usually, these photos are unidentifiable............

Thank you all for the kind words.

My "office" looks like a combination of a hoarders episode and one of those over packed storage spaces from that other show. It took me 20 minutes to get Banks out from where he was stored. I actually use to the kitchen table for when I need to setup my computer and printer at the same time.

I'm not a rich guy, but it's always good to try to help others. I'll bet that many have you could help with items for this auction, or others.

It might be a bit late to help the Hutch auction this year, but I know the George Lopez Foundation is also looking for items for their auction in May, maybe if some of you take a look deep into your archives...

Go to http://www.georgelopezfoundation.org/ to get info on donating to them.

Default Update

Happy report that another successful and fun Hutch Award Lunch is in the books, and that Doug's kind donation was snapped up at the "guaranteed bid" price of $1,500!

Thanks again Doug!

Nice job Doug, it is always great to see that type of selfless giving. Also, kudos to the OP for 15 years of giving your valuable time to help raise funds for a very worthy cause.

That is awesome and a great cause. Is there a site where you can see what all the donations ended up going for?

Bravo to the OP and to Doug. It is nice to see a story about the good side of this hobby, it is a stark contrast with that other thread that is burning up the front page.

Default Sidebar, more thanks

I've been remiss in this thread for not also thanking Rhys Yeakley, who generously donated a large, beautiful 1950s vintage Fred Hutchinson-signed GPC for this auction/event. I combined this with a terrific Detroit Tigers portrait image of Hutch, with classy archival framing of the pair.

My semi-flimsy excuse for not thanking Rhys along with Doug originally is that Rhys donated the Hutch sig for the auction months ago, and it slipped my mind as I posted to thank Doug.

So.....a belated thanks to Rhys for his generosity too! It is very much appreciated.

Here's an 18 year old Hutch pithing for the hometown Rainiers in 1938:

It's sad that this thread is currently losing 37,136 to 1,447 (dark side vs. good side). Let's bump it to the top...which will last about "two shakes of a lamb's tail."

Kudos to Rhys as well! I bet Rhys has an even bigger "vault" than Doug...

I echo Derek's comments. It is good to acknowledge those that do right by others as well.

Well done Rhys!

If anyone should get credit for this thread it should be Dave himself, my item was something small and not a big deal at all in the big scheme of things. He put this all together, got the consignments and is a major force behind the charity and its fundraising events. Another one of the REALLY good guys in the hobby, he is on my short list as one of the best out there and this charity he spearheads absolutely proves that!

Plus his collection kicks a lot of butt!

Rhys
