Default FIRST PRE-WAR

Posted By: Ray

All,
Just bought my first pre-war card ever. Probably paid a little more than its worth but I figure I'm gonna take some bites every now and then, and this bite is way to small to be worried about. You'll probably see me on here a lot, asking dumb novice questions, but stick with me, please! Thanks, Ray

There's only one way to eat an elephant -- one bite at a time. I look forward to your continued progress into pre-war collecting. Keep us posted.

Its the set I would have suggested as well for you to start out on.

You won't break the bank on em, 2 player cards with a unique design, plenty of HOFers, stats on the back, colorful. Nice pick up.

Thanks fellas. How does everyone feel about the 1936 Goudey set ("regular" size, not the wide pens) as a starter set for a guy with a very limited budget? -Ray

...I don't care much for post-WWI cards. And, as far as starter sets go, it is hard to go wrong with T206.

One day strip cards will rule the world!.. They're the cheap way to obtain vintage HOF's(relatively).

36 Goudey is a nice set for someone to collect in starting off. Not too many cards, no huge HOFers to break the bank and you can get EX condition cards in the $20-$30 range for 'commons'. Plus if you want to get really jiggy, try to collect the different backs or 1-2 players with different backs. They're not scarce but aren't all over the place either.

this auction is for a 1936 goudey freddie lindstrom. i've looked at the following sites and their 1936 goudey checklist and NONE have this guy listed in the set, yet it is clearly listed on the PSA slip. what gives?

Ray,

I am no expert on Goudey but I believe the Lindstrom card on eBay is part of the Wide Pen premiums (R314). Lindstrom is part of that set but is not part of the regular 1936 Goudey set (R322).

Further research shows me that you're probably right. It's really hard to tell the difference from the two sets. Is there an easy way? Are the backs different or #d? Thanks

The R314 premiums are postcard size, the R322 are far smaller (normal Goudey card size) and close to square.

R314.......................................R322

As far as wanting to build a set for low $$...

From the 1920-1930 era

1931 W517s
1929 R316s
1921 Exhibits

All 3 have a lot of HOFers and are attractive.

If you have not bought it yet, you may want to buy the SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (Lemke), so you dont buy cards blind. Good Luck

Frank
