scanning question

What would you say is the most effective method for scanning so that the scans a) are straight and b) look as close as possible to the actual cards. My father and i are looking to scan the front and backs of the 300 - 400 vintage cards that we own so that we don't need to haul them with us to the show when we go. We have an epson 4870 scanner....For our graded cards it's pretty easy b/c the cases are clean and we don't have to worry about the safety of the cards. For our ungraded ...i think we want to get them out of their cases to make sure that we do it correctly...obviously we don't want todamage the cards. Thanks so much... you guys have been a huge help...

It is almost impossible to get the cards perfectly straight when you scan them, after you do the scan you need to import the image into Photoshop where you can turn the image anyway you want with extrme accuracy. If you are going to print out the images I suggest you scan in at 300DPI if you wnat to post the images somewhere on the web then you need 72 DPI becasue that is the maximum for any computer monitor. After printing your image you can compare it to the original and then go back into photoshop and make color corrections.

One other tip is to use a piece of black construction paper as the background. The cards will come out sharper. Don't forget to crop the scan after the preview.

Buy some Mylar sheaths from Mark Macrae (e-mail me for his e-mail and phone). put the card in the sheath straight, and the sheath will act as a guide to keep your scan straight. And you can flip the Mylars all over the place wi5thout damaging the card! You can use ANY resolution the picture will put up with--the better the picture, the higher the res it will take. I often enlarge pictures just by increasing the resolution. But for near same--size scans, use the measurements that fit the card, and use 72 res. (50 will make the pic smaller than the card, drat it).
