1900-2011 Year Collection

Currently my collection focuses on two things mainly, Tommy Bridges and T206's. But now Bridges items I don't own come up to far and between and the Monster is well..the monster. I started a type collection but I found myself just buying random cards because I didn't own it's type and I soon realized I didn't have any attachment to the cards. I didn't enjoy all of them I just owned them.
So a thread I saw on another board gave me a good idea for a collection. 1 card, any set, from each year. I stretched it as far as I could and settled on 1900-2011. With a couple of hours and Bob Lemke's book I have my preliminary list. Keep in mind this list was created with my limited budget in mind.
The Rules
*One card from each year.
*No two cards of the same player.
*Graded by PSA, SGC, or BVG
*Emphasis on key issues, cards, oddballs, fun stories and HOF's
*Player must have been active the season the card was produced. (No Play Ball Jackson or 62 Topps Ruth.)
*Do not spend more than $500 on any one card.
*Condition is not an issue.

Bold cards already reside in my collection.
I haven't completely rounded out the list yet so I'm looking for input. Any cards that carry great stories like the 54 O'Brien brothers? What cards, sets, or players have I omitted that will fit within these guidelines? And keep in mind this collection will be built on a limited budget. No 52 Mantles. The only two that are pushing that line are the 33 Ruth and 34 Gehrig, but I felt had to be included and feel that I could pick up a poor copy for under $500.

It might be cool to break up that long run of Topps from 64-80. An MSA disc would do nicely for one of the 76- 78 slots, and maybe a Kelloggs or Hostess card? Those were some of the only commonly available non-topps sets.

Another way to save money would be to skip on the RCs and go with the second year cards that have the Topps rookie trophy on them. I do that quite often. But then again, I've never been a huge multi-rookie fan. I've always thought that a Topps Rooke Trophy Master Set would be a fun project.

Another "trick" to save money if you're on a budget is to go with All-Star or Highlight cards of key players. You can pay a fraction of the cost of the base cards many times for the All-Star version in the same set.

Maybe also think about a Topps Venezualan card for the mid to late 60s. I like 67 the best because the backs are unique.

But you're definitely on the right track. Pick cards you want to own. The great thing about a type set is that you can define it however you want.

There are lots of cool 60's and 70's non mainstream stuff.

Bazooka, Kelloggs, Post, and the ones the others mentioned might
make it a little more unique.

Perhaps a Transogram complete box with the statue in it, or a Hostess panel or complete box all easily attainable off ebay.

But I like your list, and the idea.

toughest one by far will be 1904
There is only 1 Allegheny Dummy Taylor card and it will be 4 figures if you ever locate who has it and if they want to sell.

Your list is similar to a type collector, but with your type of collection there will be some years with many many sets to choose from and some with none.

PS.
Like the great players you chose, Ike Boone, Hauser, Taylor, C.Mays, Pipp, Berg, etc. .........all are just as interesting if not more than most HOFers.

Very cool idea. I was going to do something similar ('52-modern), then I decided to go for a signed HOFer from those years, which has presented more of a challenge.

I don't know much about the T cards, but good luck finding the Goudey Ruth & Gehrig for under $500. I have both of those and the Ruth (which is graded a 1, but presents well) was well over that.
