Default Obak reprints?

Posted By: Matthew Jackson

Has anyone seen these this seller's auctions?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=5158544078&rd=1

This seller is using 1 day auctions to sell Obaks that he says may be reprints. He has sold reprints in the past but why sell Obak reprints (if there even is such a thing.) Does anyone know if there has ever been a reprint of the Obak series?

I have handled a fair amount of Obaks and these don't look good to me. The "whiteness" of the cards, between the fake aging, looks terrible. I've never seen these type reprints before but computer generated copies are probably fairly easy. In David Rudds words " if the seller says it's a reprint or fake, believe them" ......later

Why would anyone pay "real card" market price for a cheap forgery?

It's also important to note the difference between a mass-produced "reprint" set and a "forgery". I only mention this because I've seen several postings in the past when one of these forgeries shows up on ebay, asking if reprint sets were ever created for the card issue in question.

Semi-off-topic, but I just bought one of these:

Heh-heh... I couldn't let it go for only $9. It'll blend right in my collection.

I have one as well, but un-graded. Also have several colors of the Topps version. At one point I was trying to accumulate as many reprints and forgeries of the Wagner as possible, for use in an article. They are all quite disgusting.

Scott, but you never landed ol' Blue Eyes. That would have been the crown jewel. Did you give up because you couldn't buy it?

FYI - This reprint seller has had all of his listings removed. The "authenticity disclaimer" was made for his kind.

There have been 1909 Obak reproductions listed in the past on ebay without any disclaimers. So far I have never seen a 1910 or 1911 reproduction sold as an original. Also, to my knowledge no company has ever reprinted the Obak sets as they have so many other tobacco card sets.

I definitely wanted a "forgery", but they cost too damned much.

there are 2 1911 Obaks now on ebay which are out and out fakes. These bums give this "since it is not graded, I have to sell it as a reprint" crud when they know damn well the cards are fakes. Most of us immediately know when we hear that doublespeak that the cards are fake but I feel sorry for the less card knowledgeable and newbies who might not understand that these guys are simply con artists.
The colors on the Maggert are way, way off.
