How does a Piedmont card get a Sweet Caporal Transfer on the front? It is very light, but thought it was interesting.

I initially though it was a wet print but were it the words would not be mirror images. Maybe our printing expert Joe D. has an opinion. Pretty cool though.

It is a mirror image.

This would happen when the sheets are stacked as the backs get printed, after the fronts have been done.

The ink on the back is still wet when the next sheet is stacked on top, and some of the wet ink is transferred to the front of the next sheet.

Mirror image.

Now would this indicate the backs were printed after the fronts were completed?

If the backs were printed first, the colors of the front would be on top of the red SC ink, mostly hiding it.

If the fronts were printed first, the red ink from the SC back shows up on top of the front colors, as shown in the scan.

Also (presumably on my part), the fronts could be printed in mass and customized with different backs as needed. Fronts first, then backs.

I've been around piles of vintage paper/ephemera in my life - some left for years in wet basements/barns etc. I've seen similar ink transfers like this in the past, when two paper objects are stacked on top or next to one another and exposed to moisture for a period of time. Someone may have had a collection of cards that encountered moisture/humidity, the red ink bled onto the adjacent card, leaving a mirrored image. The slight blur (or bleed) of the reversed image and the overall aging of the card elude to this. Just a theory.
