What is the most cards you have for a single player? Duplicates don't count (unless they are different backs). I have 54 different Hal Chase cards and 50 Cobbs.

Fifteen Mattys, give or take. I want more! Probably around ten HR Bakers. When I was a kid in 1958 it seemed everytime I opened a pack Carlton Willey's gaptoothed punim would be looking back at me. Always bummed me out. Had like fourteen of his card.

Just BINed this sucker for old times' sake.

How come Jeff's 10 only looks a tad better than David's 6? And what does the 10 sell for- about four hundred times a 6?

My George Gibson collection, when I was actively building it, topped out at about 65 cards. I had a good portion of the difficult cards knocked off of the list, but still lacked some of the extremely difficult cards (orange border, Worch cigar, E125, W600). I'll admit, though, that that number was nicely padded with back variations (9 T206s, 4 or 5 T205s, 3 E92s, both E104s, etc).

Now my George Gibson collection consists of a Voskamp, an EPDG T206 and a 1972 Classic Card. Very fun while it lasted, though.

Regards,

Richard.

My Yaz collection got up to over 600 DIFFERENT items (120 were mag covers.) How many were "cards", I'm not sure, but am certain that Yaz ranks in the top 5 of memorabilia produced for a player while active.

I sold 98% of it, but still have this:

Thanks Jim,

Before Ebay, the Venezuelans eluded me, I only heard about them via word of mouth.

This is a complete Venezuelan run, IMO the 1972 sticker is actually rarer than the 1960 ROOKIE.

Although it's been nearly 20 years since I collected cards, I still have my Yaz and Dewey collections. I have perhaps 150 Yaz cards and 250-350 Evans (I really don't recall). At one point I was thinking of getting back into this by trying to complete a signed Evans card collection, but soon gave up that notion once I realized what a waste of money it would have been! It would have been fun, though.

David--I think Willey is still in Cherryfield, Maine. I wonder if they still have that faded banner proudly announcing the town as "Home Town of Major League Pitcher Carlton Willey"? I betcha even BOXCAR Willie never had such a proud tribute to his ragged glory.

I probably have around 20-30 Ruth cards and no doubt more of him than any other player. He was such a star that there were all kinds of esoteric cards of him made, which fits right into my collecting style...

Because of the length, timing and caliber of his career, I have ended up with 28 different Eddie Collins cards...he seems to have been in practically every set issued from 1909 through the late 1920's.

I was searching the net for Carlton Willey and found this thread and had to pipe in. Carlton is a close friend of mine and still resides in Cherryfield. I haven't seen the sign, I may have to take a ride to his house and see if I can find it.

I think I now have every Topps/Jello/Post/Venezuela card of his as well as his 1951 Quebec Braves postcard, Topps aluminum proofs (3 1962 with cap), a Topps negative (1962 without cap) and a 1964 salesman sample with Mantle on back. Or at least I have all the ones that SCD list. The biggest focus of my collection is Carlton items and I am always looking for stuff I don't have. I own carltonwilley.com though I have yet to do anything with it other than put a recent pic of him up there. That may be a project for this winter.

To DMcD, I understand your pain of pulling that card every time. For the record, Carlton hates the pic on that card. He got that gap fixed later on after he was hit in the jaw with a line drive off the bat of Gates Brown.

And to answer the original question, I probably have 15 or so different Carlton cards without duplicates.

Steve: Thanks very much for your post and for bringing Carlton Willey alive to this erstwhile eight year old boy. Back in the day it was Mantle and Berra and Mays and Aaron and Banks that I wanted to pull from those five cent Topps waxpacks, not some Milwaukee rookie I never heard of.

I googled around and learned a bit about Willey. He had a decent career (38-58) on some good Braves teams and some not-so-good Mets teams. Pitched against the Yankees in the '58 WS. A .099 hitter who hit a grand slam in the Polo Grounds. I hope the tone in my post above wasn't taken as disparaging. The rookie and the boy are fifty years older. He had an exciting career in The Show; he lived the dream of every American lad. I read your article ( http://www.nyfuturestars.com/userblurb.php?item=200 ); one only has to see his picture today to know that he is a very nice man, a contented soul living in one of the nicer corners of the planet.

Just the other day the '58 Topps Carlton Willey I bought from eBay arrived in the mail (cost a lot more than a nickle). This time I didn't groan. Next time you see Mr. Willey, tell him he's got a fan in Honolulu.

Um. Wow. Vintage cards, scantily-clad Dutch people, uku-zillion penguins, authentic Polynesian maidens, spam musubi and more at . .

When I was a kid, a LONG time ago, 55 Topps seemed to deliver up one Reno Bertoia per pack. Still have all I ever bought. (Who else would want one?) Probably 18 or so.

And at one point, about the same number of (rookie) Killebrews. But those have disappeared over the years, except one, which has "100" written on the front in ball point pen, because I was counting my stash and when I got to 100, well...

Quick! Name a baseball player who was born in San Remo, Italy, lives in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and can't hit. Reno Bertoia. Now name another one.
