Default 77 years ago today - Gehrig's streak ends

May 2nd, 77 years ago today, Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak ended at Briggs Stadium. Here's a poignant photo capturing the essence of Gehrig's mood after his decision was made. Feel free to post Gehrig items you have from May 2, 1939.

Regards,
Bryan Dec

Glad you like them Raymond.

BTW, I put that on there as I hate those ebay scammers that take photos off the internet and sell cheap copies. If ever anyone here wants a clean copy for themselves, just shoot me a message.

Great photo Bob.

Thanks Leon.
For the most part, I have never been big fan of these late in life photos as I always notice the stark contrast between his young healthy self and the more skinny frail version. His reduced frame size is especially obvious in the photo with Dickey at the Worlds Fair.

Those are amazing. But why, exactly, was Lou Gehrig a member of the New York parole commission? (Or did I misread a caption?)

Nat,
Lou was given a job in the Parole Dept after he retired by the mayor. HIt was not an honorary position, but considering how quickly his health declined, I am not sure how much work he actually did.

When Lou Gehrig retired, he did have many job offers, including one from the Yankees, many very high paying. Gehrig chose the parole commission because he wanted a position where he could make a positive contribution to society and the city, and Lou also had a bit of interest in prison reform, as most inmates were young persons, and implemented correctly, believed that prisoner reform could reshape many of the persons back into contributing members of society. Also, it would be possible to do the job from home, in the event he was not able to get to an office.

Gehrig made many visits to prisons in his role while able to get around, and later was able to to read and dictate reports with the help of Elinor until about a month before he died when his health forced him to retire from the commission. But he was able to perform his duties almost up until his death.
