Default Kreindler raffle info, pg 8, post #79, this thread

Hi All,
Going over Graig's thread, and admiring his great work, I noticed many comments from members wishing they could afford to have one of Graig's beauties. Then an idea struck me. So I cleaned the nose print off my screen and wiped the drool off of my keyboard and decided, why can't everyone have an opportunity to own a Graig Kreindler masterpiece. If there was a raffle, for Net 54 members only, the winner getting to choose his subject for canvas. Many members have expressed what they would like to have painted by Graig, and great choices they were, but may never come to fruit unless they got that chance.
So I posed this idea to one board member, and he agreed, a great idea.

So I contacted Graig about his feeling on this, And I was pleased with his response. As he put it, a chance to give back to the group who has supported him so much. A class response from a classy guy, but we all know that.
One stipulation from Craig, is that he holds the last word as to the subject. How it is presented and what it is about. Very understandable, Graig has worked hard at obtaining level of excellence and it is his name and reputation that goes on every canvas, so the winner must keep that in mind when making their choice.

So, with Leon's approval to pose this to the board, and we can hash this out if it can be done, here is how an open and honest raffle can be done.

1. $20 per entry, unlimited amount of purchases can be obtained.
2. When funds received, names are placed on a numbered, list, as they are received, 1-1000. ongoing list will be posted to assure members funds were received.
3. Once total entries obtained, that number divided into 1000 to obtain a whole number. (example; 230 total into 1000 is 4.3), 4 is the whole number, meaning everyone will get 3 additional chances to win. The list will then be expanded by reapplying the numbers list starting with 231 (3 additional times), keeping list in same sequence.
4. Using the 230 as an example, Member who received #1, would also get 231, 461, and 691.
5. Using 230 as the example, the last number would be 920, Any number after 920 is not to be used.
6. Drawing: Once final list posted with all additional extra chances, posted for 3-5 days so everyone gets a chance to see the numbers, a ballbame, preselected will be named and the last three numbers of the attendance figure will be you winner. If those numbers fall is one of the unused numbers, the last number dropped from the attendance and the new three numbers will the winner.

As this is just for discussion right now, I would like to know who would be interested, any ideas, any and all input is welcomed.
I hope it can be worked out, a chance of winning a Graig Kreindler masterpiece, it sure would look good in my mancave, how about yours.

ADDITIONAL: In my haste I omitted a couple of items I want clear. All proceeds go to Graig, not one dime will be channel any other direction.
A size was discussed, and with enough entries, 16 x 20 inch was mentioned.
Also, winner is responsible for shipping fees.

PLEASE SEE POST 79 ON THIS THREAD FOR FINAL RULES FOR THE UPCOMING RAFFLE. SALES WILL START ON SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2014, AT 8:00pm, (est)
THANK YOU.

To all,

I did forget a couple of important items,

First and most important, all proceeds will go to Graig, not a dime will go in any other direction.

Secondly, a 16 x 20 inch is want we are hoping to settle on. About 200 entries would reach our goal for that size.

Third, The winner is responsible for all shipping fees.

Very important items I forgot to enter, I apologize.

I like it!

The engineer in me is really digging the 200-entries-per-raffle scenario, with each entry yielding a 1/200 chance of winning a $4k painting by Graig. (That's better odds than most modern card packs, isn't it?) Those numbers would round out nicely, with each entry getting exactly 5 numbers, which would also make it easier on whoever is keeping track of all this.

Hopefully the response will be overwhelming, and we can make this a regular event! Maybe Graig will even get to paint someone besides Mantle or Ruth

Lance,

I like the idea of a cap at 200. The trick is stopping right on 200, but probably could be done

That is the best way to go, I believe. A nice even number would be easier..

I'm in.
As a suggestion, why not take as many entries as possible and then let Graig decide what size to give the winner based on the final total.
Either way let us know how we enter.

Mark,

I think the idea, as least for the initial raffle(s), was to have a set size that would fit Graig's schedule and a fixed goal amount for that size (in line with his going rates), and if it goes way over that goal, then to roll those entries into the next raffle. Also, it would be up to the winner if they wanted to stick with the set size, or pay the difference to upgrade to a larger size.

One thing that is important to note is that this is not like a traditional raffle where someone is profiting from administering the raffle, or the items were donated and all the proceeds are going to charity. I mean, obviously the money is going to Graig in the end, but by capping the number of entries per raffle so that a set amount of money is raised, he's essentially being paid what he would normally make for a commissioned painting. If the first one or two go as well as it looks like they will, with plenty of participation, there's nothing to say that it couldn't be set up for a larger/more expensive commission next time, or even two smaller pieces per raffle (pending coordination with Graig's work schedule, of course).

I do think that this could also be a good way for Graig/Dean to move some pieces that were done on spec or have not sold for whatever reason, but the idea for this first round was for the prize to be a commissioned piece.

Lordstan,
That was my intension originally, but it seems that most members want the cap, and this is the memberships raffle. But, this is an open discussion.

As far as payment goes, remember, this is a proposal for a raffle and based on the response, that will tell me, and after talking with Graig, whether to go forward with this raffle. Based on the early response, I would say we will probably go forward with this. We should be able to know much more in a day or two and let everyone know the particulars regarding payments.

So please keep your responses coming in and any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Your responses are important.

Lance,
Thank you for your response to Mark's question. Lance is right, hopefully, based on response, I am hoping this expands to more than just this one raffle, but I did not want to put the cart before the horse, but that is my goal. And as the first raffle, all funds generated toward Graig. Graig has given us a discount on this first raffle, and I thank Graig for that, but as he explained, lowering the value too much could hinder the value of the pieces already sold, and he wishes to protect those values. Very understandable.

just throwing this out there: what about limiting the number of entries each person can make? Even on a temporary basis. For example, for the first five days, you can only get one entry. IF, after five days, there are unsold spots, it opens up for people to buy multiple entries. This way everyone gets a fair shot, not just the guys willing to throw the most money initially.

Is it fair that some want multiple tickets.
Should there be a time for everyone to get a chance to buy one first

I am listening, and considering. Let's keep the discussion open more on this subject. My main concern is to sell the 200, and to keep the promise of the painting as a 16 x 20. Limiting scares me of not reaching the number.

Keep the responses coming in gives me an idea how flexible we can be. Please keep the input coming in on this subject.

Guys, there is always the possible contingency plan of expanding to a second painting/raffle, or upping the number of entries with the prize being a larger painting, if it's looking like anyone is going to be shut out. This isn't (hopefully) a one-off affair, and I agree with Bill that putting limitations on it before it's even out of the gate is not the best way to go.

I would absolutely do this but I do like the idea of limiting entries to one or maybe two for the first three or five days to see participation. As many as those of us who follow Graig I don't think filling 200 slots would be all that hard. Especially on the initial raffle. Just my opinion.

^^ This. As Lance and others mention..start small for the first ( hopefully many more) raffle and build on that.

* Limited to 200 - This would not be hard to fill at all.
* Keep it 16x20 - Keep it simple for the first time around.
* Have limit on ticket purchase - First 3 days, you can only buy max of 2 tickets. This way it gives everyone a fair chance to purchase at least one ticket. Some don't check the board 24/7.THEN on 4th day, open it up to as many as you want, on first come first serve basis.

Mike and Mark,
Terrific choices!

Here would be mine. I'm not sure which of these three I would pick yet.
I'm open to suggestions from other net54 members that care to offer an opinion.

Scott - I vote for the Vandy on the bottom! JK...I'm glad to see you think so highly of it. Actually, I suggest the Vandy on top. That's an awesome photo. Good Luck.
