I've never posted about anything but vintage cards before now, but I saw this story and couldn't help but think of analagous counterparts in the card word. Leon (everyone for that matter)- image accidentally tearing part of your Four Base Hits Kelly card (or the favorite card of any N54er's collection). At $139 million for the sale price of this painting, that accident has got to suck for the seller...

I heard the story on the radio this morning. Perhaps he had a little too much too drink? Can't imagine it caused more than $10-20 million worth of damage.

I went to a museum showing of paintings by Van Gogh and Hieronymus Bosch, each painting likely worth $1 million plus. What struck me is the paintings were not behind glass and I or others could and did walk up inches away from the paintings.

Hieronymus Bosch

Don't like his paintings...

but he is the leading character in my favorite author's books.

Oh Hal, he is one of my favorite artists. His triptychs are amazing. My favorites are The Temptation of St Anthony and the Garden of Earthly Delights. David--were either of these two on exhibit. Bosch is proof that acid existed in the 15th century.

I admit... his paintings are like "Where's Waldo" in that you can sit for hours and still see new things in them...

but the things you see are some FREAKY things!

A prominent comic book dealer and I were examining a NM copy of Green Lantern (GA) #1 when a drop of saliva hit the front cover. To this day, neither of us will claim responsibility.

Many any aren't sure whether the 15th century painter Bosch was a devout
Christian or Devil Worshiper, as many of his paintings are cryptic and
nightmarishly bizarre even by today's standards (Though he likely was Christian).
Interestingly, the exhbit had an original Bosch tapestry-- essentially a
picture rug hanging from the wall.

For an idea of what Bosch was about, below are details from a large Bosch
painting. The bizarre acts and creatures depicted are messages, often cryptic.

Brian,
Steve Wynn is legally blind. His personal chef is a long time friend of mine. He has some great stories about Steve & his penchant to drive boats and cars really fast despite his, err, visual challenge.
BCD no wisecracks about my girth

Seems a little strange for someone legally blind to be a major collector of art. Doesn't his limited vision curtail his ability to see all his great paintings?

I beleive you can be legally blind and still see, but your vision is bad enough
you can't function normally. There's a difference between being unable to read
a book and view a sculpture.

There was a kid's book a while back called "Pish Posh said Hieronymous Bosch"-- very odd. The Prado has a great collection of his work- not behind glass. And all that centuries before Timothy Leary too...

Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, which, according the the article I read is an eye disease that damages peripheral vision - didnt mention anything about being legally blind (though Im sure its enougth to prevent him from getting a driver's license).

It certainly hasn't prevented him from being successful. The casino empire he has built as well as his art collection are legendary. I'm guessing he can see his paintings clearly; could anyone imagine losing his sight yet still collect baseball cards? What possible enjoyment could you get out of them if you couldn't see them. The same goes for Wynn's paintings.

Well...this reminds me of a couple of things...first off, I enjoy my cards on many levels including feel and smell (stale tobacco and bubble gum is nearly heaven). My favorite thing to do when it is rainy out is go into one of my favorite old card stores. Something about the weather and damp air brings out the smell of the cardboard and gum. Yummm...

About five years ago I had a student who was blind. One of the things I used to give as prizes in my classroom was newer junk baseball cards ('91 Fleer, '90 Topps, etc.). Louie would take the card I would spell the name for him and he would put it in his braillewriter and write the players name in braille right on the card. He loved getting them.

Enjoy those cards.

Joshua

Isn't restoration accepted in the art world? Granted I'm sure no one is happy about this one.
