Default Dumb question - stray ink?

My dumb question for the day (am i allowed more than one?) ... what is the marking on the right border? Looks too neat and fine to be from a pen. Perhaps stray ink from when it was produced? The horizontal part of the marking looks to be right at the middle of the card.

Thanks!
Rob

Looks like a printers mark. They were used to help line up the printing to the pages.

Ask Joe D for more specifics.

Aren't those same marks used on "proof" cards? Like in the K Olberman thread. How would one know if they had a proof card?

I have a T206 w/ 2 or 3 of those marks on it.

Default printers alignment marks

I too think they are printers alignment marks. We have all seen them on some pre-war cards. I wouldn't go as far as throwing the "proof" word around though....and for a comparison...

Default Leon is right on

a 206 proof will have the marks on each side, top and bottom-will be blank backed and have much better registration-just like the Matty on the right.

killer card.

As noted in a previous thread there are subtle differences between the proof and the issued card. The one on the left shows the green background touching the pinky finger of Matty's glove. On the proof the green background rests well below the glove. There are other minor differences too.

Thank you! I guess I don't have a proof card!

How common are the T206's w/ 1-2 or 3 "printers marks"? Are they a dime a dozen or seldom found?

Default t206 print mark

hello,

you are all right...

the mark you have is a print mark, but not a pre-production mark.(like the matty, btw, beautiful card Leon!)
i have a few printer's t206 "crop"marks, which i believe were places on the fronts/backs of whole sheets to align for printing /cutting..

they are pretty rare, but if you search hard enough, you can find some.

the "crop"marks i have seen more of are on the backs of swet cap, pied's, and polar bears i have found so far.

i have a phillipe with the mark in the top border, i won from ebay last year, it is of only a few i have seen with this particuliar mark.

included is the phillipe i have, pic is not great, and i will try to post some pics of crop marks..
