Default REA Encore Auction Wins.

I was lucky enough to win both T206 Titus at what I thought were great prices. An Old Mill which I needed for my back run and a higher graded SGC 5.5

If you happened to upgrade from a PSA 2 Lipe and are looking to sell it, feel free to PM me. One of the last 19 I need for 520.

Won the T205's of Baker and Collins.
How about that SGC T206 Walsh closing at $3,240 with 74 bidders. Impressive.

I haven't been sleeping well so went to bed early last night.
I was up on four items when I went to bed, nothing I couldn't live without.
I woke up this morning having won a single 1979 Topps baseball cello pack graded PSA 9 for a decent price.

Continued my run of hoarding 71 Bazooka numbereds. Near set with 45 of 48 - just missing the last 3, which also happen to be 3 of the most valuable.

As luck would have it, during the heat of battle in extended bidding (after we had both run it up a bit) I got a text last night from a fellow board member, and discovered we were both bidding on this lot.

Super happy to win this and I’m sure boxing fans know more about this historic fight. Jack Johnson lost the championship to Jess Willard in 1915 in a fight in Cuba. The 37-year-old champion tired and was knocked out in the 26th round. The 26th round!!!!!!! Rumors suggest that Johnson threw the fight as a concession to authorities in a bid to return home.

The REA description “ Graded POOR 1 by SGC. Jack Johnson and Jess Willard.”

Bidding on the D310s was pretty aggressive after the 15 minute countdown started. Lost out of most lots but did pick up this nice blank-backed LaLonge with the green tint -

BBLaLonge.jpg

If anyone has any cards with the "Pacific Coast Biscuit" or "Aldon Candy" stamps on the backs, I'd be interested in purchasing some!!

Nothing for me in this auction, but I am quite pleased with the overall results of the cards I consigned, including a 1948 Topps Magic card of Ty Cobb, of which there were 2 such cards in this auction. I think that most savvy collectors agree that one should buy the card, and not the slab - i.e., a slightly-higher-graded card with poor eye appeal should sell for less than a slightly-lower-graded card with great eye appeal. Check out what these two 1948 Topps Magic cards of Cobb sold for, and guess which of these cards was my consignment (sigh!):

Tell me about it! I stayed with that one right to the end… I wish I had dumped another C-note (but who knows - maybe the buyer would have still lapped me on it!)

Not a huge thing but I got a 66 T Clemente PSA 6 at 120, with shipping and all it was about 165. It’s been hovering closer to 200. That finishes my 66 upgrade with everything 6 or above including 7s on Mantle, Koufax and Mays and many highs, and 8s on McCovey and Williams. Looks to me like prices on 60s non-Mantle and Mays stars are receding a bit.

Sorry Val, I'm guessing yours was the SGC 3? It was obviously the MUCH nicer of the two (beautiful contrast!), but the the value of the PSA plastic is strong

The Factory 606 Recruit back is less common than Factory 240, perhaps at a 25% for 606, and 75% for 240 ratio. Unlike T206, I don't remember much of a difference in price or extra demand for the less common factory 606 cards, so unless that mindset has changed recently, I don't think the factory designation had much to do with this card's final price.

I would agree. Not that the results of two auctions (for particular sets) means anything, but I have noticed softer prices for certain cards. Perhaps prices have peaked. Were prices strong or soft overall for the REA auction?

I'm by no means a t207 expert but from looking at the sales of t207 Johnson cards, both factories seem pretty well represented. I'm also unsure if that even is a thing where the factories matter in that set, I can't imagine more than a handful of people really care that much.

I'm still scratching my head at how that one did what it did. Maybe 2 people got confused and thought it was a ramly?

That Old Mill is a nice price for a rarer back! Nice pickups.

You're compiling a good collection of Titus...you won my PSA 1.5 Titus on ebay last week as well.

Yes, Rob, my Cobb was the SGC 3 with the strong image, and thanks for your kind words. I simply can't comprehend why anyone would pay more for the PSA 4 with the very weak image.

very happy with this one. Last time I bought a T206, a PSA 2 common back Walsh was this price.

Nothing on the pre-war front for me. But I did manage to overpay for a 1955 Topps Doubleheader Jackie Robinson and a 1963 Kahn's Clemente. I'm still happy to win them both.

Sad but true - it seems like the market starts with the grade, and then adjusts up if it's a nice copy or down if it's less nice. So you get anomalous results like yours just because they're in different holders. I guess for the rest of us, if we play our cards right then we can use those idiosyncrasies to our benefit.

I, too, was shocked at what this card sold for. I thought it would go for roughly $1,500 - $2K max. If the underbidder is a Net54 member, please don't hesitate to PM me with a ridiculous offer for this Factory 606 example!

geez, I went and looked these cards up... it's almost like someone paid more money for a blank card in a PSA holder!

Default Nice pickup Brian!

Congrats Brian on the LaLonge D310!

I don't remember ever seeing a blank backed D310 before.

I took the two nice looking 1948 Magic cards.

Hey Val, I agree your Cobb was so much nicer than the other one. Was the Ruth your card also, I thought they should go together.

Chuck, congrats on winning these two. Yes, the Ruth was also mine, as well as the Gehrig and Wagner 1948 Topps Magic cards, all in SGC slabs.

Congrats on your consignments Val, great group of cards. I'm in the minority and prefer SGC slabs as they are much more aesthetically appealing for pre-war cards. Nothing better than a green label SGC card, especially if it has collector provenance.

I was definitely shocked as well. I was honestly thinking around $1k at most. 6 months ago, a PSA 3 went for $1,020. I also have a Factory 606 example (SGC 1.5) that I would certainly be willing to part with for that kind of premium. I haven't noticed a difference in price for either Fac 240 or 606. 606 is a little rarer, but still plenty exist.

Yeah - Johnson is maybe 3-1 in Fac 240 to 606 populations ... so unless someone (sometwo at least) know something specific about a variation in this card that makes it worth that much to each of them, this price seems absurd. I'd sell my Johnsons (T207) for that price all day and twice on Sunday.

If anyone has any cards with the "Pacific Coast Biscuit" or "Aldon Candy" stamps on the backs, I'd be interested in purchasing some!!
Congrats Brian! I won 19 of the D310s but couldn’t get the LaLonge. I had no idea it was you bidding or I would have backed off and saved you some money. I gave up because I figured the guy after LaLonge was a blank back collector who would pay any price. It’s a nice card.

It’s a big price, but great to see a T207 get some love in this market. Hope it spills over!

I have no idea what the back is on mine, have to look next time i can.

Default Congrats to Brian, Phil, and TBob on your D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit wins!

Congrats to Brian, Phil, and TBob on your D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit wins!

I was happy to grab the Hogan D310 for a very reasonable price!

It's been 12 years since I picked up a D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit.

By pure luck, one has the standard Pacific Coast Biscuit back, one has a Aldon Candy Co. stamp, and the Hogan D310 has three (3) Pacific Coast Biscuit stamps.
