Default 1913 Boston Garter- Another Misdated Set?

Posted By: barrysloate

I've always assumed Boston Garter was issued for three years: the suitcase and garter set in 1912, the color diamond set in 1913, and the black and white photographic set in 1914. But it now appears there was one set issued in 1912, and two issued in 1914.

First, SGC labels all the diamond cards as 1914. And the card of Charlie Herzog not only has all his stats through the 1913 season, but the back also states: "Manager of Cincinnati National League team for season of 1914." It would be hard to imagine this as a 1913 set with that back information.

Can any experts add anything and date these three issues definitively?

Thanks Zach. So do you feel there is one 1912 issue and two from 1914, and 1913 was skipped? That would be rather strange, so is it possible the suitcase issue is from 1913? The skipped year seems odd.

That sounds right. So it doesn't seem like they were issued in 1913, and is it correct that two sets were released in 1914? Is there anything concrete you've found regarding the date of the black and white issue?

In one of my last years with the Standard Catalog, we switched the "date" of the colored diamond background set to 1914, though I see the introductory paragraphs were never updated. I don't recall the specific "evidence" that was presented to justify the change.
