".. in 2006 Kevin Kouzmanoff took it one step further when he became the first player ever whose first home run was a grand slam which was hit with the first major league pitch he ever saw."

Ted, you should send that guy the T206.

Mike Griffin and George Tebeau both homered in their first career AB on April 16,1887,the first game of the year. They actually don't know who hit their home run first because no one knows what time of day either of them accomplished it.

How about that slugging SS Bert Campaneris? HRs in his first TWO ABs.

Oops. Campy homered twice in his first game but it was Bob Nieman that actually homered in his first two ABs.

Good grief! I have just been informed that keith mcDonald also did it a few years back. I don't even remeber him!

Edited to reflect my various errors : )

Bingo, Howard! Very good!

Miller only had two ML home runs, so he knew how to make a grand entrance and exit. Just had trouble filling in the middle

Thanx, Bob. I erred on an earlier post, though. Campaneris homered in his first AB and then later the same game, but it was Bob Nieman that homered his first two ABs.

BTW...if I'm not mistaken, Miller's first HR was the game winner in an exceptionally long extra inning game.

Congratulations John D.

SABR is the source of this quiz......

Email me John and I will see if I can come up with a T206 that you don't have....that
might be tough to do.

The BB Almanac and Wikipedia are sometimes incorrect. In this case, neither of these sources
dug deep enough into the record books.

howard - nice zing to the Pats!
I was tongue in cheek about cheating; I assume it's fair game on an internet message board contest to use the internet to research. I think Ted knew that as well, which is why he chose a question that "the internet got wrong."

The lists everyone used only included the NL and the AL players who did it. Griffin and Tebeau were both in the American Association when they accomplished this feat which was still a major league back then. By saying "Major league" Ted included the American Association,National Association,Union Association and Players League into the equation. It just happened to not occur until 1887 and then it happened twice in the same day.

The fact I knew it offhand just means I read too much baseball. It should also be noted that most sources that know Griffin accomplished this feat don't even recognize Tebeau accomplishing it. At the time they did it,no one knew that it hadn't been done before.

But, I do usually check-out SABR, as I have found them be more accurate.....
before I post a quiz.

I think you said you'll be making the trip to the Reading Philly Show at the end of this month ?
If so, you can select the T206 at the show. Otherwise, email me with a list of T206's you are
looking for; and, I'm sure I will have at least one of them to give you.

More Hoyt Wilhelm trivia:

not only did he hit a homer in his first at bat, he hit a triple in his 2nd at bat and never hit another homer or triple again.

Wilhelm is the only HOF'er who was ever selected in an expansion draft. The Royals picked him following the 1968 season and 2 weeks later traded him to the Angels.

While on the subject of the expansion draft Gil Hodges who probably should be in the HOF was drafted by the Mets in 1962 and Trevor Hoffman who will probably get in someday? was drafted by the Marlins in 1993. So Wilhelm holds a rare distinction. CN

I believe there might be an outside chance of Wills making the HOF someday -- and les Expos drafted him in 68.

Richie Ashburn was selected by the Mets in the NL Expansion Draft back in days of yore.

Dave I believe that Asburn was acquired as a cash purchase from the Cubs but he play all of 1962 with the Mets so it looks like Wilhelm is the only one CN.

Ted,

I guess it seems that Patsy Tebeau and Mike Griffin don't count. Both homered in their first at bats. Oddly enough both did it on April 16, 1887. I'm not sure whose team played first that day so I'm not sure which player is credited as the first player to do it.

What is the answer that you had in mind?

Edited to add: I see John already provided the same answer above.

Fred,it wasnt Patsy Tebeau the player from the Old Judge set,it was his brother George"White Wings" Tebeau. By the way, there was another Tebeau with an odd nickname from back then, but I'll leave that for you to find out

Thanks John,

I remember reading about it in The Beer and Whiskey League and I for some reason or other remebered it as Patsy instead of George.
